The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Review “Home”

Home

Well, that happened. Is it me, or have most of the season finales all gone sideways at the very end this year? “The Vampire Diaries” was no exception, with “Home,” which, much like others I could name (“Castle,” “The Following”), was not without its moments throughout the episode proper. But that ending! I mean, to be fair, “Arrow” was pretty awesome, and “The Originals” wasn’t bad, even though they had Klaus crying not once but twice! What the what? But I digress…

This episode did have its strengths, though. For example, we got Alaric back (yay!), and Tyler is Tyler again and Sheriff Forbes managed to survive the Great Mystic Falls Traveler Send-Off Extravaganza of 2014. (Hey, at least they got a party before they got blown up.) We also had a cameo from Lexi, aka the adorable Arielle Kebbel, who popped in long enough to take care of Markos, at the expense of not making it back herself. At the time, I was thinking that it would be good if she came back, because then she & Stefan could reconnect, but then we had the twist.

We already knew that Bonnie was going the way of the limbo-land when it collapsed, but alas, Damon did not make it back in time for the end of Liv’s spell, either, and was therefore stranded with Bonnie to wait out whatever happens when that happens. The fact that Grams (Jasmine Guy) refused to come back because of something or the other makes me think that maybe all hope is not lost for Bonnie, but I’m not sure if that includes Damon. They were holding hands, though, so maybe that will help.

So, are they really going to take out Bonnie and Damon? I could almost see them doing so with Bonnie, as Kat Graham has a singing career to fall back on, but I would be genuinely surprised if they didn’t bring back Ian Somerhalder. I mean, he’s one of the leads, and last I checked, the reason a lot of ladies watch the show, in particular. Probably a few guys, too, if you know what I mean and I think that you do. No, I don’t think they’re gonna do that any more than they are gonna take out Castle on a show called “Castle.” You don’t throw away your ace in the hole, so to speak.

My guess is that Grams made some sort of deal and/or sacrifice and that Bonnie will be brought back to the land of the living, and maybe, since she and Damon are holding hands, he will be, too. I mean, they certainly wouldn’t be the first people brought back from the dead on this show. At this point, it’s no wonder Elena was so blasé about coming with Damon on his drive of doom. I mean, why not? They’ll be resurrected in short order, right?

Well, okay, not so much this time, but you know they will find some loophole or another to pull it off, lest the show hemorrhage viewers at the loss of a beloved cast member, which I can’t see CW doing. Ah, the good old days, when dead cast members stayed dead. You didn’t see Somerhalder pulling this on “Lost,” am I right? Oh wait, he did come back towards the end. Curse you, “Lost”! This is all your doings! #BlameTheIsland #StillNoAnswersToThose?s

Alright, alright. There’s enough blame to go around. Let’s focus on the positive. Hey, we got to see the Mystic Grill blow up, right? That place was so in need of a makeover, anyway. Maybe they can rebuild it with a spooky theme, sort of like a Hard Rock Café with a supernatural bent. Plus, they can rename it the “Actually Mystic Grill” and turn the show into a wacky sitcom where everyone gets into crazy shenanigans. It’ll be like “Sabrina”-meets-“Cheers”!

Okay, okay. Moving on… All in all, this was a decent finale, I suppose. Yes, the ending was dubious and a bit anticlimactic, but we all know that they’re not going to kill the moneymaker, so settle down, everyone that thinks Damon is actually dead. He’s no deader than Stefan was, and Stefan seemed pretty dead, and he’s back. Hell, Alaric’s been dead for literally seasons and he’s back, as if nothing ever happened. So, don’t fret Somerhalder fans: Damon will return, as sure as I type these words.

What did you think of the big “Vampire Diaries” finale? Were you satisfied with the ending, or disappointed? Glad to see some old, familiar faces back on the show? Sad that Lexi didn’t make it back? Happy that Alaric did? Glad Sheriff Forbes is still in one piece? Vent your Damon frustrations and otherwise down below, and maybe I’ll see you next season!
