‘Bones’ Season 9 Interview: David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel Tease Shocking Finale

Bones Season 9 Episode 23 The Drama in the Queen (3)

There are just two episodes of Bones left before season nine wraps up, and fans should brace themselves for a game-changing finale. TV Equals recently joined in a call with stars David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel to discuss the final two episodes, Boreanaz’s stint behind the camera as the director of the finale and more.

An all-new episode of Bones airs tonight, Monday, May 12th at 8PM ET/PT on Fox. The season nine finale will air May 19th.

What Is Ahead In The Penultimate Episode

Tonight’s outing, “The Beauty in the Queen,” finds Sweets out in the field with Brennan and a new squintern at the lab. While Brennan likes the latest squintern (played by guest star Laura Spencer), expect her to bristle at the intern’s use of intuition over hard science. The squintern will also have an antagonistic relationship with Sweets that could turn into something more.

Could Sweets have a new girlfriend if the character comes back around in season 10?

Boreanaz On Directing The Finale

Boreanaz has directed episodes before, but taking the reigns of the season finale, “The Recluse in the Recliner,” was a big deal for the star. One of the biggest challenges was the episode’s many moving parts: there is a congressional hearing, a case and a huge cliffhanger all crammed into the hour.

“You get to the end of the season and then everybody’s a little tired and worn out and with this specific season finale being that there was so much information that we kind of had to gather up and put out there in one 45-minute hit, it made it difficult and challenging,” Boreanaz said. “There were lots of elements that were involved, whether it was dealing with the big, huge hearing in front of Congress or the intense battle between other forces that could come in and jeopardize Bones and Booths’ relationship as well as the outcome of where they’re heading into as far as season 10 is concerned.”

Why The Finale Changes Everything

Nine seasons in, it is hard to believe Bones can still shock, but the series is aiming to leave fans with a serious cliffhanger this season. In addition to the congressional hearing and upheaval in Bones and Booths’ relationship, Boreanaz and Deschanel also teased a possible conspiracy storyline in the works.

The case the gang works on in the finale will be closely tied to Booth. As in he chats with the dead man right before he turns up dead. “This is kind of an unusual investigation because the dead body has something to do with the whole story, which was – there was a connection between Wesley Foster, who’s the dead person,” Deschanel revealed. “Booth gets a phone call from him, kind of a mysterious phone call from someone he doesn’t know who says he wants to talk to him about the McNamaras, who were the people related to the ghost killer case, if people remember from a couple episodes back. In fact, Stephanie McNamara was the ghost killer, so there’s a whole connection, but this has to do with a broader part of the McNamaras.”

Additionally, the finale is very “emotional,” especially for Deschanel, and could leave Booth and Brennan’s jobs in jeopardy. “I think it’s interesting to see the end of this run, especially season nine in this specific finale, that there is a lot of destructive forces that could kind of come upon us and we find out that there’s more to it than what meets the eye and they’ve been working underground for a while, whether that’s through conspiracy theories or just stuff that they’ve been hiding in the FBI or through the Jeffersonian, but it all kind of comes to a head and it’s pretty detrimental at the end,” Boreanaz added.
