‘When Calls the Heart’ Season 2 Announced by Hallmark Channel

When Calls The Heart 102

The new Hallmark Channel period piece drama When Calls the Heart, which is based on the book series of the same name by renowned Canadian author Janette Oke and the cabler’s 2013 made-for-TV movie, has received a second season order.

This renewal marks the network’s second original series to receive a pick-up, the first being ‘Cedar Cove’.

‘When Calls the Heart’ debuted on the Hallmark Channel back on January 11, running for 12 straight weeks with its final episode airing on March 29. During that first season run the series averaged 1.5 million viewers. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “the network estimates that (the series) has been seen by an unduplicated audience of 12.3 million viewers”.

The frontier series stars Erin Krakow (‘Army Wives’) as a privileged Canadian socialite who takes a teaching position in a small coal mining town where Canadian Mounted Police Officer Jack Thornton (Daniel Lissing from ‘Last Resort’) has recently been posted. The cast also includes Lori Loughlin (‘Full House’), Chelah Horsdal (‘Arrow’), Martin Cummins (‘Eureka’ and ‘Dark Angel’) and more recently veteran actor James Brolin (‘Hotel’ and ‘Castle’) and soap star Jack Wagner (‘The Bold and the Beautiful’).

Michelle Vicary, the Network Programming Executive Vice President of the Hallmark Channel, had this to share about the renewal, “The success of ‘When Calls the Heart’ proves the show fills the niche of quality, family-friendly entertainment that audiences want to see in today’s crowded television landscape. The overwhelming wave of support from the show’s legion of fans (known as Hearties) tells us that they have fallen in love with its great storytelling, and we are thrilled to have it continue”.

The Hallmark Channel has yet to announce how many episodes the second season of ‘When Calls the Heart’ will receive or an official air date yet, though.
