Fox Shortens ‘Glee’s Fifth Season Run

Glee Season 5 Episode 15 Bash (1)

Fox has reduced the episode order for Glee, bringing the series’ fifth season down to 20 episodes. Originally the network renewed the musical for 22 episodes but has since shortened their order due to the show’s production hiatus at the start of the season. The series got off to a late start following the unexpected and tragic death of cast member Cory Monteith.

A ratings drop was also said to be behind Fox’s decision, according to The Hollywood Reporter. ‘Glee’s weekly viewership has fallen below the 3 million mark in the key demographic of 18-49. A huge drop for the series that was once watched by an average of 4 million viewers in its first four years on air.
“Glee is still a great property to have on our air,” said Fox COO Joe Earley. “There have been some scheduling challenges … but what we see is still an incredibly popular show with a lot of time-shifting.”

There was some talk that ‘Glee’ could air in a different time slot with co-creator Ian Brennan adding, “With DVR, in a lot of ways the night you air … doesn’t matter.”

‘Glee’ is expected to return for its sixth and final season after being renewed by the network several months ago for a rumored 24 episode order. Fox has yet to comment on whether those plans are still intact.
