‘Game of Thrones’ Season 5 and 6 Announced by HBO

Here is one twist Game of Thrones fans saw coming: HBO has renewed the blockbuster fantasy series for a fifth and sixth season.

The news comes after the season four premiere which was HBO’s most watched episode since The Sopranos‘ series finale. “GAME OF THRONES is a phenomenon like no other,” noted Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming in a statement. “David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, along with their talented collaborators, continue to surpass themselves, and we look forward to more of their dazzling storytelling.”

The two season renewal could put the HBO series ahead of the A Song of Ice and Fire books on which the series is based depending on how the writers utilize the material in books four and five. Are you worried the television series will surpass its source material, or do you think George R.R. Martin will complete Winds of Winter before HBO catches up?

Game of Thrones season four airs Sundays at 9PM on HBO.
