Bones Season 9 Review “The High in the Low” – Wendell’s Return Raises Issues

Bones Season 9 Episode 20 The High in the Low (1)

In this episode of Bones, called “The High in the Low,” the team catches a case involving medicinal marijuana and welcomes back Wendell only to find that he may not be able to keep working with them.

Sometimes an episode of TV comes along that makes my job a little harder. It can be for many reasons – an episode was so good I don’t know where to begin, or it wasn’t good and I still don’t know where to begin. This one is tough because it hits upon a hot subject and one that a person seemingly can’t talk about without getting political. Since I have no desire to discuss politics when reviewing one of my favorite TV shows, I’m going to keep my views on marijuana brief. I personally have never used it and don’t ever plan to, yes, even if I were given a diagnosis like Wendell’s. My reasons are personal and I’ll just leave it at that.

Now that that’s covered, let me get back to the actual review of this episode and say that I really felt for Wendell, as well as Cam and Booth. No matter what you think about the issue, it’s hard not to see someone suffering and feel bad for them. It’s a terrible situation, no matter how you look at it. Of course Booth and Cam wouldn’t want Wendell to suffer or be punished, but they also did the right thing according to their own morals and the rules of their jobs. That takes a certain kind of personal integrity and I admired it even as much as I felt awful for Wendell.

In the end, I really liked how the subject was looked at from both points of view and, in the end, neither was shown as completely wrong or completely right. I also loved that they managed to find a way to work around all the hoopla and do something that made me incredibly happy, which is find a way for Wendell to keep working with the Squint Squad. I don’t know if this means we’ll see him every week, but I’m just glad to know that he’ll be back.

My favorite bits:

I didn’t think I could giggle harder than when the convict screeched like a howler monkey, and then he begged to go back to jail. Classic.

The fact that the harder Booth argued he wasn’t set in his ways, the more it actually proved Brennan’s point.

Hodgins referring to the body in the log as a “present.” I don’t want to be at that man’s house on Christmas morning.

“Seriously, I mean don’t you guys ever get revolted by this stuff?” – Right there with ya, Booth.

Discovering that termites eat bone. Eeew.

Wendell walking in the door. I had no idea has was coming back. Yay!

“I actually think you’re making the cancer thing very sexy, Wendell.”
“Ewing’s sarcoma has an 80% mortality rate, Angela. That’s not sexy.”

Brennan pointing out that cancer was only a part of Wendell’s life for now. Loved that.

“I’m sorry, is that distal phalanx crawling away?” – And with that, they almost made the buggies look cute. Nicely done, show.

Cam speculating on how many relationships began and ended in the former janitor’s closet.

Meeting Angela’s new toy, Theo.

Cam reminding Angela that they needed to think the way Wendell was.

“I officially love Theo.” – I agree! It’s nice to see a new version of the Angelator.

“What are you going to do? Write ‘No Termites Allowed’?” – Ha!

Wendell calling Hodgins the Pied Piper of Termites. I think that’s a title he would wear proudly.

“Even the ancient Egyptians used marijuana to treat hemorrhoids.”
“Which they probably got from sitting around being stoned all day.”

“Sorry for having scruples.”

Sweets’ look when Booth’s bag spilled open and all of the little tests fell out.

Poor Cam having to point out to Wendell that, legally, his use of marijuana could jeopardize any case he worked on.

“Thank you Dr. Hodgins, because I didn’t feel bad enough.”

Booth and Wendell’s entire talk in the coffee shop.

Booth and Brennan showing up at Wendell’s door to tell him he could come back as a consultant. Awesome!

“You did this for me?”
“I’ll do anything for my friend, especially if it’s gonna get you better.” – All together now… Awwww!

Brennan giving Wendell a huge pile of work to start on right away.

Booth getting 97th percentile on his test. Yay Booth!

Brennan pointing out that she couldn’t race due to her boots.

“Lighten up, will ya? We’ve already had sex in Virginia.”
