Back in 1995 the Universal Pictures film 12 Monkeys came out in the theatres, starring Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt. Now, nearly 20 years later, the folks at Syfy are moving forward with a 12-episode TV series based on the film.

In this small screen adaptation, ‘Nikita’ alum Aaron Stanford will play a time traveler from the post-apocalyptic future who appears in present day on a mission to locate and eradicate the source of a deadly plague that will eventually decimate the human race. Among the cast of this new series will be actress Amanda Schull (‘Pretty Little Liars’, ‘Suits’ and the classic film ‘Center Stage’), Noah Bean (‘Nikita’ and ‘Damages’) and Kirk Acevedo (‘Fringe’).

Charles Roven (‘Man of Steel’ and ‘The Dark Knight’ trilogy) and Richard Suckle (‘American Hustle’) will be the executive producers with Natalie Chaidez (‘Heroes’ and ‘In Plain Sight’) acting as executive producer/showrunner.

Dave Rowe, President of Syfy, had this to say about the new acquisition, “’12 Monkeys’ is a captivating time travel adventure and high stakes race against the clock. We are thrilled to add it to our slate of engaging and thought-provoking new scripted projects including the recently announced event series ‘Ascension’ and the second season renewal of ‘Helix’ from Ron Moore”.

’12 Monkeys’ is expected to debut on Syfy in January of 2015.
