Hawaii Five-0 Season 4 Review “Ho’i Hou” – Fanbuilt Episode Rocks

Ho'i Hou (Reunited)

In the fanbuilt episode of Hawaii Five-0, called “Ho’i Hou” (Hawaiian for “Reunited”), fans voted for elements like props and wardrobe and helped build a pretty good episode.

I purposely chose not to vote for anything in this episode because I wanted to stay mostly in the dark about it. I was curious to see how they would put together the elements that were voted on and I have to say it came out great. I wondered if it might feel fake, having pieces of the story picked by fans, but had I not known that this was the fanbuilt episode, I never would have guessed it.

Another fun part of this episode for me was the fact that I was part of the group of press that stood in on the production meeting as it was being created. So it was nice to see how everything came together from that point of view as well. Being behind the scenes never seems to ruin the magic of TV for me, it only enhances it.

Having the setting of the murder at Chin and Jerry’s high school reunion allowed us to learn more about them, while still giving us an interesting case for the team to solve. I also enjoyed the fact that the murder weapon was a five-inch stiletto. That’s not a murder weapon you see very often and I liked that it wasn’t used in a way you would expect. It wasn’t wielded by a mad man and stabbed into someone’s body, instead the poor victim fell on it. It was very clever and also one of the worst ways I can think of to die.

Another thing I liked about this episode was how well they wove in the continuing story of Steve’s hunt for the mystery behind the coordinates Jerry found on his father’s tool box. The fact that the body was snatched before he and Danny could get there, plus the convenient “disappearance” of Sam seems to indicate that this thing goes way up the food chain. I would warn Steve that he’s messing with something that’s going to get him in big trouble but I know how fruitless that would be so I’m just going to sit back and enjoy the ride to see where his digging takes him.

My favorite bits:

“So this is what the gym looks like.”

Chin encouraging Jerry to just be himself.

Jerry standing up to a former bully. Awesome.

Poor Chin having to answer questions about being married.

Jerry remarking that he had a shot with Naughty Nani because he had just dumped husband number six. At least he’s hopeful.

Worst way to die? Yep, I think so. Ouch.

Steve and Danny out for a hike. It looked cute until I realized it was for something serious.

Poor Jerry staring down at Laura’s body.

OMG did the show just give us a. plane-ument??

Naughty Nani trying to use her tears to get a snuggle from Chin.

Max zipping his mouth when Steve warned him not to ask any questions about the evidence he needed tested.

“I would ask you how the reunion is going but the body bag kind of gives it away.”

Danny’s flourish when he told Steve and Chin that he had found Tony Gibson.

Their suspect literally disappearing into thin air. Okay, maybe not literally, but you know what I mean.

Steve and Chin trying to search a magician… erm, I mean illusionist = Absolutely hilarious.

Danny informing Tony that he was still annoying, even though he made a card “magically” appear in Chin’s pocket.

Tony offering Kono a job in his act and Chin promptly offering to show him the disappearing teeth act.

Jerry telling Catherine about how nice Laura had been to him in school.

Freaking out when Steve seemed to be pulling his gun on the CIA guy.

Steve informing Danny that he wasn’t upset by the sample’s disappearance because he had more of it. Brilliant.

Kamekona taking his newlyweds on an extra-long flight to help capture a murder. Talk about a memorable honeymoon.

Jumping when Bradley hit Danny with the shovel. Ouch.

Kamekona trying to instruct Steve where Bradly was by telling him to go “straight.”

Kamekona counting down until Bradly would run into Steve’s fist. That was amazing.

Wait. Bradley didn’t do it?? Nice twist.

Kamekona making Steve pay for his fuel.in food.

Chin’s yearbook photos. So cute.

Finding out that Jerry had been voted Most Likely to be Abducted by Aliens.

Steve going to meet Sam and finding the office empty and the phone ringing.
