Supernatural Chat: Will Dean Lose the Battle with the First Blade?

Blade Runners

Hey there, Supernatural fans! Well, it finally happened. After waiting for weeks to find out what the Mark of Cain would do to Dean when he got hold of the First Blade, we saw the consequences in the last episode.

Anger Issues

When Dean grabbed the First Blade, the Mark of Cain glowed from within and his entire body seemed to vibrate with rage. It was a scary moment, seeing Dean so out of control, and even Sam showed some fear as he tried to talk his brother back to reality. With all of the anger that has been flowing between Sam and Dean recently, I wasn’t at all sure in that moment that we weren’t going to see Dean try to attack Sam. Will Dean be able to control the rage that the First Blade and the Mark of Cain bring out in him? Personally, I think the real question is: How much do we want him to control it?

Why Dean Shouldn’t Fight the First Blade… Too Much

The whole reason that Dean took on the Mark of Cain and the hunt for the First Blade was so that he could destroy Abaddon. As frightening as it is to see Dean under the control of those two supernatural elements, they are vital to his quest. As a mere mortal, no matter how well-trained of a hunter he may be, Dean stands no chance against the Queen Bitch of Hell. So there is a certain amount of benefit in Dean allowing the blade and mark to have their merry way with him.

Dean’s Possession

I’ll admit that part of the reason I hope that the Mark of Cain and the First Blade take control of Dean is purely selfish. After seeing Jensen Ackles give us just one tiny peek at what it would be like to see Dean lose control to the blade and the mark, I immediately wanted to see more. Over the seasons, we’ve seen quite a few versions of Sam. He’s been possessed by a demon, Lucifer, an angel and even been soulless for a while. Though it was hard to see Sam not acting like himself, the fan in me always enjoyed what those situations allowed Jared Padalecki to do as an actor. Is it wrong that I want the same thing for Jensen? Since Season 5, when we found out that he was the true vessel of Michael, I’ve been dying to see Dean possessed. While the Mark of Cain isn’t exactly the same thing, it’s definitely close enough.

Abaddon vs. Dean

There is also the strong desire to see Dean take on Abaddon. With him wielding the First Blade and strengthened by the Mark of Cain, that is going to be one heck of a fight and I can’t wait to see it.
