Hawaii Five-0 Season 4 Review “Ma lalo o ka `ili” – Family is Complicated

Ma Lalo o ka 'Ili (Beneath the Surface)

In this episode of Hawaii Five-0, called “Ma lalo o ka `ili” (Hawaiian for “Beneath the Surface”), the team looks for a missing girl after her father is killed, while Steve and Danny both deal with some new family issues.

I think the lesson we learned in this episode was that moms can make life complicated. Danny’s mom came to visit and ever since then he’s been alternately trying to keep tabs on her and give her the support she needs. Just when it looked like there was no hope for his parents staying together, Danny manages to pull off a truly romantic gesture by flying his dad (and various accoutrements) to the island to surprise his mom. The plan could have gone horribly awry with the two ending up in a big fight, but luckily it worked and finally Eddie was able to tell Clara how he really felt about her.

It was a sweet moment, one that was in direct contrast to both the case and Steve’s issues with his mother. The case had me fooled for a good portion of the episode. I truly thought the girl was in trouble and the boyfriend was the bad guy. But when I discovered how manipulative she was, I started rooting hard for the team to catch her and was extremely happy to find out that she wasn’t going to get one dime of the money she had done it all for in the first place. Not only that, but it was her father’s love that took it all from her, because he chose her education over his own insurance policy. Take that!

As for Steve, his mother didn’t make an appearance in this episode, but thanks to Jerry’s snooping and paranoia, her presence was felt. I don’t know exactly what the code on the toolbox means and why it points to an empty field with a grave in it, but I have a feeling it’s going to mean nothing but more trouble for Steve.

My favorite bits:

Danny’s mom trying to sneak out and getting caught by her son. I bet there were many times when that whole scenario was reversed.

Underwater Steve swimming shot. Thank you, show. That is all.

Wait. That wasn’t all. Also appreciated the slow pan down Steve’s wet chest. Do these guys know their audience or what?

Steve thanking Jerry for the farewell breakfast. and the farewell dinner.

Steve giving Jerry the “it’s not you, it’s me” speech. Aw.

Me and Steve both cracking up at the same time when Danny reluctantly admitted that he followed his mother.

Danny pointing out that he and Steve were even because Steve had his mom put under surveillance. Good point.

That water jet pack thing. Too cool for words.

“You’d be surprised what you could find with an active imagination and a little scraping.”

“Do you always have to be a detective?” “Yeah, pretty much. It’s what I do.”

Danny telling his mom that it wasn’t about him, it was about her being happy.

Steve walking into his office and finding the craziness that was Jerry’s work.

“Danny! Danny! Danny! We’re done this 118 times!” – Who wants to bet that somebody actually sat down and counted all of their carguments/car chases and that is precisely how many times they’ve done that on the show?

The end of that car chase. Whoa.

Kelly actually figuring out a way to get Tommy killed. Bitch of the Year. You win.

“Tommy thought he was protecting you from a monster. But as it turns out, the monster is you.”

Kelly discovering that her father chose her education so she lost all the money she thought she was getting from the insurance. Nice.

Danny greeting his mom in a tux and giving her and his dad a memorable night. Loved it.

Eddie telling Clara that he was nothing without her.

Grace interrupting her grandparents kissing and then taking their order. Adorable.

Danny and Grace sharing a fistbump when they saw the plan was working.
