The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Review “While You Were Sleeping”

On the latest episode of “The Vampire Diaries,” it was time for Elena to find out what happened “While You Were Sleeping,” and we knew it wasn’t going to be pretty. As memories that weren’t her own- and yet sort of were, as she had experienced them via Katherine, at least on some level- Elena did her best to keep it together, but it certainly didn’t come easy. As Elena suffered through strange hybrids of filtered remembrances of Katherine past and oddball hallucinations conjured up by her resentful mind and the virus she was injected with, Caroline and Stefan did their best to track down some sort of cure for both her and Damon.

They succeeded ultimately, but at what cost? Though Caroline was able to rescue Stefan by promising to track down his doppelganger by any means necessary- even if it meant doing so with Enzo by her side- clearly the toll it was taking on him was high, and could potentially be deadly if she didn’t make something happen, and fast. A deal with the Travelers is shaky at best, from the looks of things, so Caroline better hope she pulls it off. As it stands, the jury is still out on what exactly they are up to.

Ditto newbie witch Liv, and her brother and GBF Luke, who weren’t as in the dark as they pretended to be in the past. Indeed, it would seem as if Liv was a stronger witch than she had previously let on, and her brother is either a vampire or somehow immune to being compelled by one, i.e. by the use of vervain. Those certainly looked to be vampire bites on his neck, though Elena puzzled out that they must have been Katherine’s doings when she was out of control of her own body and mind. So, my guess is he isn’t a vampire, just well-informed and more in the loop than he lets on. What he and his sis are up to is another matter altogether.

On the plus side, it would seem that the Travelers kept up their end of the bargain with Stefan, as the cure was indeed delivered to Damon and Elena, and they would seem to be healed, at least for now. We’ll have to see how that plays out in the long-term, but in the short one, it would seem that at the very least, the two have been able to work things out just enough to more or less get past some of their more dubious choices since Katherine took Elena over, including Damon’s killing of both Maxfield and Aaron. Not to mention the fact that Katherine managed to dupe everyone for some time, without anyone recognizing that she wasn’t really Elena. Awkward!

This was a decent enough episode, I suppose. Although I’m still a bit fuzzy on what the Travelers are up to, I assume we’re meant to be in the dark somewhat there. Ditto the business with Liv and Luke. That said, this was mostly a transitional episode intended to get Elena and Damon back to normal after the whole virus debacle. Yes, it was a little convenient that they managed to cure them both over the course of one episode, but given the alternative, it was kind of a necessary evil. You would rather Elena and Damon be caged up for an extended period of time instead? Me, neither.

I am reasonably interested in where the show is going from here, however, so there’s that. Though I don’t quite get what they’re up to with the whole, it’s just intriguing enough to make me look forward to what “The Vampire Diaries” has in store for us next. They’ll be hard-pressed to top the whole Katherine affair, but knowing this show, it’s entirely possible she might even be back in some form or fashion. I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

What did you think of “The Vampire Diaries” this week? Happy with the direction things are headed in? What do you think the Travelers are really up to? How about Liv and Luke? Will Caroline and Enzo end up hooking up? Will they get their man in Stefan’s doppelganger and put a stop to him? If they do, will the Travelers honor their arrangement? Or will it even matter if they do or not? Glad Damon and Elena are together again? Were you surprised that Elena forgave Damon so easily for all that he did? Sound off on this and more down below and see you next time!
