Hobbit Star Aidan Turner Cast in New BBC One Drama ‘Poldark’

Aidan Turner, best known for his roles in The Hobbit films and as the vampire Mitchell in the original Being Human, has landed the lead role in the new BBC drama Poldark. The series is a remake of the popular 1975 series of the same name and follows the journey of Ross Poldark who returns from the American Civil War to find the world he left behind in shambles. Poldark will do his best to start over, even as he is pulled between a need for justice and a disdain for authority, and loves that cross social lines.

“Ross Poldark is an iconic role – we needed an actor with the right combination of striking looks, youthful rebelliousness, emotional complexity and maturity of presence which hints at the man he becomes across the saga,” Damien Timmer, executive producer for Mammoth Screen said in a statement. “In our minds there was only one candidate. Happily he said yes!”

The eight-part series begins production in April 2014 for a 2015 debut on BBC One.
