My 5 Wishes for the Second Half of Season 4 of The Walking Dead

Are you ready for some… Zombies? Our favorite zombie apocalypse is about to resume, or as I like to think of it, fresh walkers are back on the menu, boys! I am also looking forward to the show that immediately follows it, The Talking Dead! If you have never watched, I highly recommend it – it is very entertaining and you can learn a lot of things related to the production of the show.

It has been two months since last we visited the world of Rick Grimes and company. Two long months to think about what happened in that devastating mid-season finale. The carnage, the destruction, the desolation – almost beyond belief! There are 8 episodes left until the season 4 finale, but there is no need to despair, since it has been confirmed that there will be a season 5!

Now, you need to understand that I am not a nihilist. Quite the opposite, in fact, I probably should be labeled an optimistic twinkie. I like happy endings, even for shows like The Walking Dead that really are not designed for it. Indeed, the situation for the characters on this show goes from bad to worse on a regular basis, and perhaps that is the most realistic appraisal of what would happen if the worst case scenario ever did actually occur.

Nonetheless, I like to think that humanity can survive such an apocalypse – don’t you? I like watching the struggle, but ultimately, I want to see the good guys win. With this in mind, I have compiled a list of my five wishes for the back half of season 4.

Baby Judith Must Be Alive

Baby Judith - The Walking Dead

For me, nothing gives hope for the future like children, and in particular a baby. Amidst all the blood, death, and despair, there was baby Judith, or as Daryl calls her, “Li’l Ass Kicker.” I think her mere existence gave a lot of the main characters reason to carry on, even in the darkest moments.

So, when at the end of the mid-season finale her fate was in question, it became imperative that she had somehow survived. Yes, it is against all odds. But, darn it; don’t take my little glimmer of hope away!

Carol Returns

Carol and Rick - The Walking Dead

The departure of Carol – or should I say exile? – in the first half of season 4 was for me a terrible loss. I understand why Rick told her to leave, and I also understand why Carol killed the two sick people. But, normal laws do not apply in this post-apocalyptic world, no matter how much they try to tell themselves they do.

Now, there was the added complication of worrying how Tyreese would react when he found out Carol had killed his girlfriend, certainly a valid concern. But, the fact of the matter was that Carol was an asset to the survival of the group. She fought well, handled weapons like a pro, and it was likely her teaching the kids about weapons, without their parent’s knowledge, that helped more people survive the assault on the prison than would normally be expected. I think she deserves to return! As an added bonus, consider the drama associated with that return.

Glenn and Maggie Get Married

Glenn and Maggie - The Walking Dead

Ok, so a frivolous matter, certainly. When you are fighting for survival every day of your life, who has time for celebrations? And, marriage has little meaning in this world where living to see your next sunrise is iffy.

But, going back to keeping hope alive, just like children are the hope for the future, so is a wedding the sign of a family, which is also a sign of our society’s survival in the face of these terrible circumstances.

The Various Groups Find Each Other

The Walking Dead

At the end of the mid-season finale, the group watched as the prison was destroyed and overrun with walkers, and as everyone fled, they were split into many smaller groups. From a dramatic perspective, this was an important move for the show, because it certainly ratchets up the tension. It makes everyone more vulnerable.

While that is a good thing, I hope that by the end of season 4, at least some of the smaller groups will meet up again. This splitting up will mean there will be many story threads to follow, and I am not convinced that will enhance our viewing experience.

Answers, I Want Answers!

Sasha, Maggie and Bob - The Walking Dead

After the mid-season finale, I had lots of questions. I wrote about them here: 8 Shocking Events and Unanswered Questions From The Walking Dead 2013 Mid-Season Finale. I am expecting that those questions will be answered in the final eight episodes of the season.

Of course, I also fully expect that the new episodes will leave us with more questions. That is part of the fun of it after all, and I understand that! It certainly adds to the excitement we feel as a new season or mid-season is about to premiere.
