Shameless Season 4 Review “My Oldest Daughter”

Episode 402

Another daughter? Now, if there was ever a vehicle for introducing new characters to Shameless then it was Frank’s fertility. Now in desperate need of a liver but with no one willing or able to offer him a new one in ‘My Oldest Daughter’, it looks like we’ll soon be seeing a brand new, previously unknown Gallagher on the scene. With Lip at college and Ian MIA (presumably still in the army), that house was looking pretty empty. We all knew that Fiona’s simple, three-kid, health insured, working life wasn’t going to last for long, didn’t we?

And it was all going so well for Fiona this week, with glowing reports from clients, a company car and a loving boyfriend, but now that company car has been smashed up as a result of some classic Gallagher road rage and said boyfriend has shown his insecure and needy side. Those two traits don’t go well with Fiona, especially if it means she’s going to have to call him every night in spite of whatever’s going on in her crazy life, and it’s only a matter of time before something gives. With the promise of a new sister, Frank still hanging around the house and Debbie’s rebellious phase continuing, breaking point might come sooner than we expected.

Speaking of Debbie, things are are getting really creepy there. Not only has the new boyfriend got his own car, he has an apartment and, after sneaking a look at his ID, is revealed to be 20 years old. Even though Debbie recovers some of her senses and admits to her real age right away, he doesn’t seem to mind and continues with the date anyway. Any 20 year old who knowingly dates a tween is bad news, and I hope this storyline doesn’t get too dark for little Debs. It’s completely believable that something like this would happen to a character like her, especially with the friends he’s been hanging around with, but it’s still uncomfortable viewing.

Some light relief came with V and Kev, who aren’t just getting two for one on babies – they’re set to welcome four new members into their family in nine months time. Should this all go well for them, there’s no doubt the storyline will only get more hilarious and ridiculous as the storyline continues, and I sincerely hope we get to see the taking care of their new litter. With Stan leaving the bar to Kev in his will, my guess is this season will have him attempting to create a successful business out of it while V and her mother both deal with their pregnancies, and I honestly can’t wait.

Lip’s story is interesting this year, with college keeping him separate from the rest of the family. How long is this going to last? He seems pretty set on treating college the same way he did high school – skating by with minimum effort – but he got a shock this week when he discovered his luck with ladies has taken a hit along with his grades. Though the pretty and perky tutor will obviously be our main love interest while he’s there, I’m really glad we got to see the dressing down from the girl from his neighbourhood. Unlike Fiona, Lip isn’t trying to fit in with his new life at all, and it was clear from his phone call with Carl that he desperately misses home.
