Justified Season 5 Review “The Kids Aren’t All Right”

Justified Season 5 Episode 2 The Kids Aren't All Right (8)

Raylan hit the jackpot in this week’s Justified. The Marshals seize a criminal’s mansion and high-end car, and Raylan enjoys the bounty. The rest of Harlan County’s residents aren’t making out so well. Ava is still in prison. Boyd’s crime empire is slipping through his fingers. And Dewey…good old Dewey has new houseguests – the Florida Crowes – which is the one thing that can cramp his status as a WT baller.

I think everyone can agree that right now, it sucks to be Boyd Crowder. He just can’t get a break. He faces an angry group of drug peddlers who are sick of having supply problems. Boyd assures them that the drugs are coming, only to later discover that his shipment was hijacked and his men killed. It’s unclear who has it out for Boyd. After the trouble he had with Detroit and Ava’s imprisonment, Boyd looks like he’s about to explode. That is something I would love to see. I don’t necessarily want to see Boyd beating another mortician or nobody – I want to see him open a well-planned, take no prisoners can of whoop-ass on his enemies. But, is Boyd actually smart enough to do that or is he really just a petty criminal.

I’m a little unclear on how things are going to play out with Mara and Boyd. It looked like she was going to out him for her husband’s beating. Then she told him she wanted the money to stay quiet. But, the police are out for Boyd and have now threatened her She might be off the hook if her husband is able to tell the police himself what happened, now that he has emerged from his coma.

Raylan has his own headache this week when Loretta returns. She’s entangled herself with a Memphis-controlled drug outfit that turns on her when she shorts them on their payment. Loretta is a good example of nurture over nature. She was raised by a drug dealer and can’t seem to break away from that. I seem to recall that when Mags kicked it, Loretta came into a chunk of money. So why does she need to be doing any kind of work?

Loretta is right when she comments that Raylan can’t help but rescue her and her boyfriend, because it’s in his nature. That’s true and one of the reasons why Raylan is the hero of this tale. I like the relationship between Raylan and Loretta because it shows his capacity to think like a dad and shows his patience. It’d be interesting to see how Boyd handled a kid. I don’t think he’d do as well.

I’m not sure how I feel about the potential hook up of Loretta’s social worker and Rylan. She seems like a hot mess that will only cause problems. Certainly, she’s no Winona. Now that we know Justified is going to end after next season, my sights are already set on the series finale where I expect to see a reunion between Raylan, Winona, and their daughter. It would be seriously crappy if we didn’t get that result after six years

One thing that was intriguing this week was Art’s interest in the death of Nicky Augustine. Raylan didn’t kill Augustine, so I’m not sure what Art is fishing for. I can’t see why he’d be gunning for Raylan. Frankly, who cares that Augustine got smoked by a lowlife who was later killed? Two bad guys gone. Where’s the downside?
