Community Season 5 “Basic Intergluteal Numismatics” Review

Community Season 5 Episode 3 Basic Intergluteal Numismatics (4)

Oh how I love a Community concept episode – particularly when they are cleverly named. Visually and thematically, the episode reminded me a lot of one of my favorite episodes of Community – Basic Lupine Urology. It was quite fitting that the episode ended with another Star Burns reveal, similar to Basic Lupine Urology. Although the somber note at the end of that episode as Star Burns’ fake death, last night’s somber ending was the news of Pierce’s death. I think it’s pretty safe to say that Pierce’s death was not faked.

If Basic Lupine Urology was a play on Dick Wolf shows and a love letter to The Wire, Basic Intergluteal Numismatics was the show’s take on the CBS procedural shows like the million versions of CSI now running on the network. Like Basic Lupine Urology, last night’s episode made use of characters in ways that long-time Community fans could truly appreciate. A few examples:

– You knew someone from the study group was going to be the Ass Crack Bandit’s victim and Troy was the perfect choice. We’ve frequently heard Troy refer to “butt stuff” in the past, so of course he would be the ACB’s victim.

– Troy as the ACB’s victim was a perfect setup for Abed to use his vast knowledge of television tropes to comfort his best bud. I don’t know what I loved more – how Donald Glover played victimized Troy in the wheelchair with cups and blankets or how Danny Pudi played his part as the supportive friend, pushing Troy up to Starburns so he could slap him.

– Once again, I think the writers had the perfect amount of Chang and Dean Pelton. We were also treated to more Jonathan Banks and the return of John Oliver.

– The use of secondary characters like Neal and Garrett has been great this season.

Admittedly, I am not a Jeff/Annie ‘shipper, but I quite liked how their pairing in last night’s episode led to really funny moments with other characters. The questioning by the Dean of exactly what Jeff and Annie were was great. My favorite moment of the night might have been Leonard attempting to kiss Jeff. By the way, I totally ‘ship Jeff and Leonard.

If we keep getting more Dean Pelton, I may have to make a list of my favorite moments each week. Here are a few from last night’s episode:

– I had totally forgotten how much the Dean loved Dalmatians until I noticed the multiple pictures of them on the walls of his office.

– I can’t believe it took five seasons for the Dean to find a use for his fake butt at Greendale.

– I hope some day we get to see Dean Pelton’s mom’s house.

– I love when the Dean uses a random occasion to hold a dance.

Overall, I thought last night’s episode was great. What did you think? Any thoughts on Jeff and Leonard’s ‘shipper name? Sound off below!
