NCIS Season 11 Review “Kill Chain” – A Manhunt Begins

Kill Chain

In this episode of NCIS, called “Kill Chain,” the team is put on what begins as a standard investigation, but soon becomes anything but once Hollis Mann returns and a terrorist gets away.

Oh NCIS, how you lulled me into thinking that McGee’s story in this episode was only for background. There were the jokes from Tony about “McWaffling,” the rather naughty remarks about McGee’s inseam from Delilah, the wonderfully heartwarming conversation between Abby and McGee in her lab and finally his appearance in the tux.

All of that played so well into the storyline about the drones and Hollis Mann’s return that I never once thought that McGee or Delilah could be the ones in actual danger. How fantastic it was to see the entire story spin on a dime and go off in a new direction once they realized that the terrorist was targeting the gala and how much I gasped when that explosion went off. My only disappointment was that we didn’t get to see what happened there, but I have a feeling that we’re going to see enough of the ramifications of that explosion to make it worthwhile.

I don’t know how the show managed it, but there was a ton packed into this episode. In addition to the McGee/Delilah story, there was of course the delightful awkwardness that came from seeing Gibbs and Hollis together again. I always wondered what happened to her and it was nice to find out that she found happiness in a new job. I hate to say it, but I think she was right about Gibbs. Six years ago I don’t think he was ready for the relationship, but I wonder if he might be now. He’s come a long way since then, but since she’s married now, I guess we’ll find out. I did enjoy watching them have to work together though, so hopefully we’ll get to see more of that.

Though they didn’t have huge roles in this episode, I did like some of the moments that Bishop and Tony had. I loved Tony’s little pep talk to McGee in the beginning. I may have been almost as taken aback as Bishop was, but I also liked how Gibbs put her on the floor and told her to do her thing. We’ve seen a couple times now that she’s not as confident as she might have first appeared and I thought it was great that Gibbs knew exactly how much to push her.

All I can say now is: Bring on part two!

My favorite bits:

Bishop showing off a picture of her new parking space.

Bishop finally meeting Bishop and turning into a fangirl.

Thinking that Tony’s explanation of “McWaffling” was pretty good.

Gibbs telling McGee not to use him as an excuse.

Tony asking the guy how long the CIA had been recording his thoughts through his teeth.

Tony walking his chair over to have a chat with McGee.

McGee begging Tony to stop when he started talking about Skynet.

The look on Gibbs’ face when Ducky asked him to sniff the corpse.

Kind of giggling over Gibbs using the term “knocking headboards.”

McGee realizing that Delilah was there for a meeting with Vance and Gibbs. Whoa.

“It’s not another one of your ex-wives, is it?”
“Close enough.”

Vance telling Gibbs to keep him out of his fight with Hollis. Smart man.

“Gibbs and Hollis are probably up there arguing jurisdiction.”
“Their version of foreplay.”

Tony and McGee looking around fervently before pulling up the history of Gibbs’ exes.

Bishop suggesting that they ask Gibbs about Hollis. Now that, I would like to see.

Abby accidentally putting her foot in her mouth when she didn’t know Hollis was there.

The loooong silence between Hollis and Gibbs in the car. Can we say awkward?

Finding out that Hollis got married. Whoa.

“How’d you get my sizes?”
“I’m a cryptologist for the Department of Defense. I think I can figure out my boyfriend’s inseam.”

Delilah telling McGee she knew he never wanted to come to the gala with him. Ouch.

I’m with Hollis. I miss the boat in Gibbs’ basement, too.

“God, I forgot how infuriating you could be.”
“Was that the apology?”

Gibbs pouring out the booze into his old glasses, just like old times.

Abby slapping McGee after he claimed Delilah was getting to close.

“Delilah is the best thing that’s ever happened to you. You can’t protect yourself from everything.”

Gibbs, and Tony, ordering Bishop to stick to Tony.

Gibbs slowly taking Bishop’s gun away after the explosion.

Abby pointing out that at least Bishop only blew up a “smallish building.”

McGee in his tux. Aw.

The Abby and McGee fist bump. That is all.

McGee looking up to see the drone just before Gibbs and Hollis saw the explosion.

Gibbs spreading out everything on the floor to help Bishop do her thing.

The three most hated words ever: To be continued.
