Disney Plans Teen Movie ‘The Descendants’ Featuring Children of Classic Villains

What happens if you are the child of Cruella De Vil, Maleficent, the Evil Queen or Jafar? Do you go evil too or make nice with Beauty and the ex-Beast’s son who is about to take over the kingdom? These are the questions facing the teens in the Disney Channel’s upcoming television movie The Descendents.

Casting is currently underway on the project which will be directed by High School Musical director Kenny Ortega. Set in the modern day, the film will follow the villainous teens who have been imprisoned on an island alongside wicked step sisters, henchmen and other assorted Disney bad guys. The teens will be allowed entrance into the kingdom’s prep school where they will be classmates with the offspring of Fairy Godmother, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel and Mulan. The catch is they must choose between helping their parents regain control of the kingdom or trying to fit in.

“We mined Disney’s treasure trove of stories and developed a new, comedic approach to the fabled characters everyone knows and loves,” Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer, Disney Channels Worldwide, said. “The result is a modern and unexpected re-interpretation of classic heritage characters utilizing contemporary, relatable settings and themes.”

The Descendants is set for a spring 2015 debut.
