Supernatural Season 9 Review “Rock and a Hard Place” – Second Time is Not the Charm

Rock and a Hard Place

In this episode of Supernatural, called “Rock and a Hard Place,” the boys chase after a god that attacks people who have broken a vow of purity after Sherriff Mills puts them on the case.

I’m going to go ahead and talk about the best part of this episode first, which was the return of Sheriff Jody Mills. Like most of the fandom, I love Jody and usually find her addition to an episode extremely entertaining. The sad thing is that not even she could save this stinker of an episode.

If you’ve been reading my reviews for the past few years, then you know that I very rarely give any TV show a bad review. I prefer to focus on the positive, but honestly, other than the appearance of Sherriff Mills and a few funny one-liners, I wasn’t impressed with this one at all. The last time I remember being this bored during an episode of Supernatural was last season’s “Bitten” episode. The complaint I had then was that it didn’t have enough Sam and Dean in it and I remember thinking – as I was watching this episode – that it was strange that I could be that bored again with an episode that had Sam and Dean all over it.

The show has tackled the subject of virginity before in “Like a Virgin,” and it was good. But while that episode did poke fun at those seeking a life of purity, it didn’t trash them the way this one did. Dean’s treatment of Susie actually had me cringing. I understand if the boys don’t believe what these people believe, but Dean actively trying to get Susie to break her vow kind of made me ill. Of course it was soon revealed that she was a former porn star, but even that fact was shoved in our faces in a “See? She really does like sex!” way. As if that made it okay that Dean’s whole intention had been to “hit that” in the first place.

For me, this will just go down in history as one of those rare episodes of Supernatural that I don’t like. The fact that it is such a rare occurrence makes me hopeful that the show will be back on track next week (already the mid-season finale? Nooo!). Until then, I shall be hauling out the industrial bleach to get the memory of this one out of my brain.

My favorite bits (yes, I did have some):

Totally pausing my DVR over Sammy’s bowl of cereal to see if I could figure out what kind it was. My vote was for Captain Crunch.

Dean asking Sam if he wanted a pillow.

Jody pointing out that the more she knew about the wackadoo stuff, the better armed she would be. Smart lady.

“Angels? You’re joking.”
“Don’t get your pants on fire. They suck.”

“Ready to get your worship on?”

The look on Dean’s face when Sam asked if they could join the chastity group.

“It’s a commitment to your virginity.”
“I don’t think we can un-ring that bell.”

Not being able to help laughing my arse off when Bonnie declared Sam and Dean virgins.

Both Sam and Dean basically telling the truth when asked why they wanted to become virgins again.

Dean describing the touching and the pressing and the pulling and… *stops to fan self*

“Dragons? Those are a thing?”
“Yeah, too many things are a thing.”

Dean realizing why Susie looked so familiar to him. I thought he was going to have an aneurism.

Dean telling Susie that she was stuff of dreams. I don’t know why, but I found that suuuuuper creepy. Especially when he went into details.

Jody finding a quick and easy way to get some virgin blood.

“What the fudge, lady?!”

Vesta informing Sam that he was all duct tape and safety pins inside.

Jody taking out Vesta. Yeah!

“What did I miss?”

Sam wondering, again, if something was majorly wrong with him.

Zeke showing up just in time to tell Dean that he couldn’t tell Sam the truth and then popping out just in time to leave it awkward. Way to go, Zeke.

Dean telling Sam to have a little faith. Ouch.
