Parenthood Season 5 “The Ring” Review

Parenthood Season 5 Episode 8 The Ring (2)
In this week’s episode of Parenthood, we got back on the campaign trail with Kristina (bummer), Amber worried about the cost of her ring, Zeek adjusted to life without Camille and poor Victor just can’t catch a break.

The Kristina for Mayor camp started out riding a major high, as it was revealed that she was within just two points of Bob Little. Always keeping it real, the Parenthood writers had Bob do what many politicians do when they find out the opponent they underestimated is rapidly closing in on them – they get dirty. Thanks to a few unfortunate, but innocent photos, Adam and Kristina found that their personal life had replaced the election issues as the central focus in the campaign. I was absolutely shocked that Bob would even go there. After all, Kristina knows about his dirty little campaign secret – Amber. The public would not look well upon a candidate who started canoodling with a staff member and gave her a promotion.

Speaking of Amber, she was not well-handled with the ring Ryan purchased for her. Is it really about the ring, Amber? Or is it just those feet getting colder and colder by the minute? I think it is the latter. Kristina tried to raise the issue to no avail. Amber is still in denial and understandably concerned about how owning her real feelings would impact Ryan once she revealed them. Uncomfortable with the size of the ring, Amber pushed Ryan to return it. He didn’t look too well-handled either. These two need to go back to dating, live in separate places and put the marriage talk on the backburner.

We checked in with Zeek this week, who initially seemed to relish his freedom now that Camille is off globe-trotting. Peeing in the bushes? Really, Zeek? Although he acted like he was annoyed by his kids stopping by, it was pretty clear that their company was welcome. I am really rooting for this couple and I hope that Camille’s time away makes them stronger when she returns. I think Zeek will be more than ready to sell the house and get started on their third act.

Other thoughts . . .

With each passing week, I become more worried that Joel and Julia will not make it to their third act together.

I need Victor to put one in the symbolic win column this season. Seriously.

Sarah’s neighbor/tenant Carl is a mystery wrapped in an enigma. I was expecting a party with beer and chips (nothing wrong with that) and instead, he welcomed Sarah with wine and cheese. What are the writers doing with Sarah. I’m so confused. Carl? Hank? And how about that news that Jason Ritter will be returning?

As usual, Parenthood does not disappoint. It was nice to have a break from Drew – even if it meant the return of the campaign trail with Kristina. What did you think of this week’s episode? Sound off below!
