‘Downton Abbey’ Season 5 Announced

Coming off a record-breaking fourth season in The U.K. that just ended Sunday night, ITV has already announced that the Crawleys and their downstairs counterparts will be back for a fifth season of Downton Abbey in 2014. The hit drama was the highest rated series on British television this year averaging over 11 million viewers a week.

As for we Americans, well, we’re waiting patiently for the January 5th season four debut on PBS’s Masterpiece Theatre (right, guys?), but PBS was quick to confirm that they will be airing season five for American audiences.

“As American audiences ready themselves for the January 5th premiere of Season 4, our devoted Downton fans will rest easy knowing that a fifth season is on the way,” says MASTERPIECE Executive Producer Rebecca Eaton.

Once again, season four will premiere stateside Sunday, January 5th on PBS. Meanwhile, British viewers can look forward to the annual Downton Christmas special set to air Christmas day on ITV, which will see Shirley MacLaine reprise her role as Martha Levinson and Paul Giamatti join the cast as Cora’s playboy brother, Harold.

Production on season five will begin in 2014.
