Hawaii Five-0 Season 4 Review “Ua Nalohia” – Welcome to the Family

Ua Nalohia (In Deep)

In this episode of Hawaii Five-0, called “Ua Nalohia” (Hawaiian for “In Deep”), Steve’s sister drops into town with a surprise – a baby girl. Meanwhile, Catherine gets down to some serious business.

Three men and a baby – that’s what a good portion of this episode was and I liked it. What’s not to like about watching guys like Steve and Chin take care of an infant? I didn’t mention Danny because we already knew he was amazing with kids so the comedy from him came mostly from his observations of how the other two were handling the baby. I thought it was a fun storyline and it was in the episode just the right amount – enough to bring comedy relief but not too much to take away from the case. The only gripe that I have with it is the fact that I never, not once, could wrap my head around Mary being given a child. Does she even have a full-time job? I’ve known people who have adopted and it seemed like there were a lot of qualifications that Mary simply does not have, at least not that we’ve seen. But whatever, she’s a mom and it means we’ll have more chances to see Steve with a baby and that works for me.

As for Catherine’s story, my predictions came true. I have to admit that I didn’t see it happening nearly this fast, but sure enough, she was offered a place on the team. I also have to admit that I’m kind of in love with the way that they did it. If the writers had simply dropped her into the team earlier this season or even straight after she quit the Navy, I don’t if I would’ve bought it. Our little crew has a very specific dynamic and we’ve already seen what happens when someone gets dropped in who doesn’t belong (such as She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named from a couple seasons ago). But Catherine earned her right to be there, even I can’t argue that. She spent this entire episode handling a case on her own and did it in such a way that it impressed everyone else. And the best part was that I found it completely believable and in character. So much so that, by the end of the episode, I was ready to hand her a badge myself.

So now the team has a new member of the family. What does that mean for Kono’s eventual return? I have no idea. What I do know is that Catherine just got them that much closer to finding Adam, which is a very good thing.

My favorite bits:

Steve giving Catherine his badge.

Catherine going from sexy to badass in a heartbeat. Man, that was one heck of a fight.

“Who the hell are you?”
“Five-0. Now where the hell’s Sato.” – I think Catherine is my new hero.

Steve opening his door to find the baby there. His face was classic.

Mary adopted a baby? I’m sorry, how did that happen?

Danny pointing out that Mary hadn’t adopted a baby, Steve had. Once again, I agree completely with Danny.

“There’s gonna be no suckling.”

Chin realizing that he knew the victim.

Max cutting Matt’s hair and shaving him. That was. wow.

Totally suspecting Davies the moment she started bad-mouthing the ATF. It made me think it was some kind of a cover.

Cracking up at Steve’s idea of treading “lightly.”

The sight of Uncle Steve walking through the door with the baby.

“Hey, why is there a baby attached to your chest?”

Chin holding the baby. He looked like he was holding a bomb.

“How am I supposed to know if she’s hungry?”
“Trust me, you’ll know.”

“Did you get anything besides baby puke?”

Steve engaging in baby talk. I think my uterus just imploded.

Loving that they let the baby babble in the background of the conversation about the case. That was adorable and very realistic.

Danny with the baby. Aw.

Seeing Charlie was back. Yay!

Danny telling the baby a story about the handsome prince, the mean ogre and the lovely black stallion that was coveted by the ogre. I can’t even..

“We’re gonna need more guns.”

Finding realtor Cherie more than a wee bit creepy. Daryl Hannah totally nailed it, though.

The baby saying what sounded like “bad” when Danny was looking off the balcony. That was so perfect. I loved that Caan played right into it.

Steve putting the sun hat on the baby.

Steve laying down the law for Grover.

“You’re texting Max right now, aren’t you?”
“No, I’m not.”
“You’re a terrible liar.”

Aha! I KNEW Davies was involved.

The mom and son watching Matt’s message.

All the boys looking sad when Mary took the baby away.

Steve giving Catherine back the badge. Ah, so here we go. I was wondering when it was going to happen.

“Welcome to Five-0.”
