Awkward Season 3 Review “And Then What Happened?”

awkward-3x12

There was only one question on everyone’s lips in this week’s Awkward, ‘Then What Happened’ – did Jenna and Matty break up? And the answer was and wasn’t the one that I expected, with Matty actually the one willing to give the couple another shot and Jenna the voice of twisted reason. She wanted him back in a half-hearted kind of way, but she knew he would never look at her the same way again.

The episode was about the collective piecing together of the night, with each of the guests at Jenna’s surprise party having a little but more of the story. As a result, we heard very little from Jenna and even less from Matty – this was Tamara’s week to shine, and boy did she! This episode made me gladder than ever that Tamara and Jake are such a solid couple, and they provided the comic relief in a pretty dark situation.

And I feel like this is just the tip of the iceberg, and that a Jenna post-Matty breakup is going to be a nightmare to watch every week. I mean that in a good way, of course, as the teasers for the second half of season already revealed to us that Jenna is going to become a very unlikeable person this year. That means characters like Tamara, Ming and Sadie are going to be able to become heroines of sorts, and that’s totally fine by me. Where Jenna and Colin go from here, however, is anyone’s guess.

Will they start a fully fledged relationship now that they’re both free agents? Something about the two of them together just doesn’t work, and I have a feeling a relationship without any scandal or danger would just bore both of them at this point. Jenna is an expert at wanting something she can’t have, and she’s never really been very good at maintaining a mature relationship after that unattainable thing is attained. That was her problem with Matty, and now her entire life has imploded.
