Hawaii Five-0 Season 4 Premiere 2013 Review “Aloha ke kahi I ke kahi” – In the Blood

Aloha ke kahi I ke kahi (We Need Each Other)

In the Season 4 premiere of Hawaii Five-0, called “Aloha ke kahi I ke kahi” (Hawaiian for “We Need Each Other”), Steve tries to get closer to the truth about Wo Fat and ends up dealing with a group of kidnappers/terrorists/overall bad guys with a dangerous agenda.

Well, everyone’s favorite action-packed drama set in Hawaii is back and I hate to use such an overused cliché but boy, did it come back with a bang. Steve and company managed to really piss off the NLM , who not wanted to get to Wo Fat after he helped them get Salgado, but they also had no problem breaking into the Five-0 system, stealing Kono’s information and then selling it to the Yakuza?

Confused yet? That’s okay, because there was plenty of action, quips, new characters, carguments, explosions, helicopter rides and other assorted awesomeness to keep this episode extremely entertaining.

Chi McBride joined the cast as SWAT Captain Grover and I knew I was going to like the guy as soon as he took of his clothes in order to get close to a bunch of kidnappers. I think he’s going to make a great addition to the show and I have a feeling that I’m going to enjoy him and Steve having it out throughout the rest of this season. It makes sense that not every cop would be happy with how Five-0 does things and I definitely see Garver becoming a challenge for Steve and the rest of the team.

In the end, the team resolved one threat, but now of course Kono and Adam are in danger again. I knew they wouldn’t be left floating off into the sunset happily ever after. I wonder if the team will be able to help her or if Kono is on her own?

Finally, there was the (somewhat) big reveal that Steve was at least suspicious that Wo Fat might be his brother. Looks like someone has been reading the Hawaii Five-0 message boards. Seriously though, it was a bit of a surprise to see him come up with that theory as I hadn’t realized he’d been thinking in that direction. The entire H50 fandom? Yes. Steve? Not so much. Now it remains to be seen if Steve (and the rest of us) are right about Wo Fat and Steve being brothers.

My favorite bits…

That whole opening sequence with Steve taking down all the guys as the bomb was counting down. I loved the way it was shot.

Steve dragging the “still breathing” guy down the destroyed hallway. That was all kinds of badass.

Gratuitous shirtless Steve in the first six minutes of the episode. Nicely done, show.

“Captain Grover, hell of a week to start a new job.”
“Wouldn’t have it any other way.”

“They came to play.”

“This guy’s leaking, he’s not gonna make it.”

Chin trapping one of the bad guys by using his phone.

Kamekona going toe-to-toe with the trainee cop.

“Move along before I arrest you.”
“You mean before you call somebody over to arrest me.” – Oooh, snap!

Danny asking Steve to put him out of his misery.

“Did you check the emergency exit?”
“No, I went to get donuts.”

Danny picking the weirdest time to talk about Gabby.

Steve telling Danny that he should be sure he loves Gabby before telling her.

“Are you speaking from experience? Because I personally don’t think it counts when you say it to a pistol.”

Distrusting the tow truck guy as soon as he pulled up.

Grover stripping down to his skivvies and walking into the building. Well, that’s one way to get everyone’s attention attention.

Steve shooting one of the bad guys through another bad guy. Okay, that was a little hard to watch. Also? If he just gave the guy CPR, wouldn’t shooting him again be a bad idea if you’re trying to keep the guy alive? Just a thought.

Wow, that poor guy Ricardo was definitely having a bad day.

“You’re free to arrest us now.” – Okay, wait. What??

Danny spotting that Max was lying when he said he wasn’t worrying when they were inside.

Oh man, I knew Catherine was in trouble.

Another high-speed cargument. Love it.

Danny asking if he needed to put on extra Kevlar or call his daughter to say goodbye for the last time.

Steve pointing out that he had dealt with people like those before and he wasn’t going to let anything happen to Catherine.

“It’s beyond stupid. It’s off the goof-meter completely.”

Danny reassuring Steve that he had his back, always.

Steve and Danny letting the kidnappers go. Wow.

The bad guys took Danny’s car!? Noooooooo.

Steve finding Catherine. Whew.

“Oh wow, look at that. That’s a Giant Amikihi.” – Danny making himself scarce was so cute.

“I’m good, but you let them get away.”
“That’s what they think.” – Actually, I guess they were perfectly aware they were being tailed. Oops.

“You know, I always figured your driving is what would kill my car.” – Me too, Danny. Me, too.

Grover telling Steve that he had made an “epic fail the size of Texas.”

“You’re invading his personal space, which is a bad idea.” – I love how Danny keeps warning people not to mess with Steve.

Whoa. That was on heck of a crash… and shootout.

I swear to God, if Steve jumps on that damn… too late.

Steve throwing the guy out of the helicopter was a nice touch.

“You see this is the reason I don’t like to fly, because of you.”

Danny screaming at Steve and alternately asking to make sure he was okay.

“Someday I’m gonna miss this.”

Steve suddenly feeling better when he realized Catherine had offered free beer.

Danny giving Steve “a hand.” Juvenile but still hilarious.

“Coach is even worse than I imagine.”

Steve taking a blood sample from Wo Fat. Well it looks like he’s been wondering the same thing we all have.

Danny telling Toast that if he told anybody what he found he would shoot him, and Chin reassuring him that Danny wasn’t joking.

Yep, totally knew they were looking for Kono.

What did you think of this episode of Hawaii Five-0? Got any favorite bits or least favorite bits of your own? I’d love to hear from you!
