FOX has given a series commitment to the comic book drama Gotham, which is based on legendary comic book character Commissioner James Gordon. This straight-to-series program will, according to The Hollywood Reporter be an origins tale, focusing on the “DC Comics fixture”.

‘Gotham’ will show the history behind Commissioner Gordon, focusing on “the villains that made the fictional city famous”, but it will “chronicle events before Gordon meets Batman”. No casting announcements have been made yet nor are there any other details on the new series as yet.

This new FOX project is just one of many comic book related series that are either on the air or will soon be on the air (besides what is obviously already on the big screen). ABC just debuted Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and The CW has ‘Arrow’, which will start its second season in early October; while FOX has ordered a pilot for ‘The Middle Man’, ‘League of Extraordinary Gentlemen’ and ‘Unthinkable’ and The CW is working on a ‘Flash’ spin-off.

‘Gotham’ comes from executive producer Bruno Heller, the showrunner of ‘The Mentalist’.
