Former ‘Doctor Who’ Star Billie Piper Joins Showtime’s ‘Penny Dreadful’

Billie Piper is used to hopping through time thanks to her days as The Doctor’s companion on Doctor Who, but the actress will be staying firmly put in Victorian England for the duration of her stay on Showtime’s Penny Dreadful.

Piper will play Brona Croft an Irish immigrant who comes to England in hope of escaping her dark past. Piper joins the previously announced Josh Hartnett (Pearl Harbor) and Eva Green (Casino Royale) in the psychological horror series. Also joining the series are Helen McCrory (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Parts 1 & 2) as “Madame Kali,” a spiritualist, Danny Sapani (The Bill) as “Sembene,” an African warrior, and Simon Russell Beale (My Week with Marilyn) as “Ferdinand Lyle,” an eccentric Egyptologist.

While Piper is best known for her stint as Rose in the first two seasons of the new Doctor Who, she has also starred in Secret Diary of a Call Girl, ShakespeaRE-told: Much Ado About Nothing, The Ruby in the Smoke, Mansfield Park and The Shadow in the North.

Do you think Piper will fit into Penny Dreadful‘s creepy vision of Victorian London?

Penny Dreadful will premiere on Showtime in 2014.
