Covert Affairs Season 4 Review “Space (I Believe In)” – Grief Can’t Be Bought

Covert Affairs Season 4 Episode 6 Space (I Believe In) (7)

In this episode of Covert Affairs, called “Space (I Believe In),” Annie has to help investigate a case where she is the culprit and discovers along the way that Henry Wilcox’s motivation goes beyond anything that can be bought.

Annie has definitely had some tough missions throughout the past few seasons of this show, but I think being forced to help with the investigation of a death where she was the culprit was probably one of the hardest. Her lack of knowledge in basic investigative skills left her scrambling a few times, such as when she innocently asked if skin would still be under Seth’s finger nails after his time in the river. The more evidence she and Rossabi found (okay, it was mostly Rossabi doing the finding), the more everything started pointing in her direction, of course. I wondered how in the world she was going to get out of it, but I don’t think I ever saw Henry sticking his nose in to help.

Henry has been a hard character for me to pinpoint this season. I knew all along that he was meant to be fairly mysterious, but I could never really figure out what his true motivation behind everything was. Now, it looks like I have my answer – at least part of it. I understand now that the reason he is trying so hard to take down the CIA is still purely based on a father grieving for the death of his son and wanting to put the people he feels are responsible away. I knew that would’ve been a reason at the beginning of all this, but for some reason I thought things had changed. He seems so conniving these days that I didn’t think it was still about grief.

Grief doesn’t explain everything that Henry has been doing to and for Annie though. What are his motivations for constantly getting her into trouble and yet also getting her back out of it. Is he hoping to gain her trust so that she will join his little firm? It seems that he could get anyone he wants, so why Annie? I have to wonder if he hasn’t become attached to her for some reason and is trying to replace his dead son with a new daughter.

Either way, by the end of this episode I was a whole lot more interested in Henry than I have been so far this season.

My favorite bits…

The look on Annie’s face when she saw Rossabi walk in the door.

“Keep calm, carry on.”

Auggie yelling at Annie not to take her anger out on his hardware.

Henry offering Annie a job.

“What are your interests, exactly?”
“Get me the flash drive and I’ll tell you.” – Sneaky.

Totally knowing that Annie handed Rossabi a fake drive.

The red lights flashing while Rossabi was visiting. That was kind of cool.

“As if I needed another reason to be into you.”

“Pretend you’re talking to your girlfriend and not Barber.”

Seeing that they had returned Henry’s car just in time. Whew!

Gasping nearly as loud as Annie when Rossabi and Higgins went over that balcony.

Rossabi not falling for the cover up. Is it wrong that that made me him admire him more?

Annie asking Henry if everything was about him getting her into trouble so he could get her out. Good question.

Annie turning down Henry.

Annie informing Henry that she was going to take him down.

Whoa? Auggie’s ex might still be alive? There’s a twist.
