Netflix Releases ‘Derek’ Trailer Starring Ricky Gervais

Netflix is set to premiere Derek, the new comedy from Ricky Gervais, this September and the streaming giant has now released the first trailer for the surprisingly gentle looking comedy. While Gervais tends to specialize in humor designed to make the viewer uncomfortable, Derek seems downright goodnatured as it follows a well-meaning retirement home worker as he brightens the lives of people society has all but forgotten about.

Gervais stars as Derek, alongside Karl Pilkington as Dougie, Derek’s fellow co-worker and landlord, David Earl as Kev who is described as a “lovable trainwreck” and Kerry Godliman as Hannah, Derek’s best friend who possesses a capacity for goodness that matches his. While the characters will see push back from the outside world, the central focus will be on the misfits assembled within the care home and the ways in which they stand together. In addition to starring in Derek, Gervais also created and wrote the series, and serves as executive producer.

Check out the trailer below. Are you eager to see Gervais take on a less brash character?

All episodes of Derek‘s first season will begin streaming exclusively on Netflix on Thursday, September 12th at 12:01 AM PT.
