FX’s ‘Fargo’ Nabs Oscar Winner Billy Bob Thornton As Lead

FX revealed today that Oscar Winner Billy Bob Thornton (Sling Blade) will star in their 10-episode event series Fargo, inspired by Joel and Ethan Coen’s 1996 classic film. Thornton will play Lorne Malvo who is described as “a rootless, manipulative man who meets a small town insurance salesman and sets him on a path of destruction.” Production on the limited series begins this Fall with an eye toward a Spring 2014 debut.

Written by Noah Hawley, FX’s Fargo is set to feature all new characters and a new case while maintaining the Minnesota niceties that made the film so darkly funny. Meanwhile, the Coens will serve as executive producers on the project.

Thornton is an acclaimed writer and actor, having won the Best Screenplay Oscar for Sling Blade as well as nabbing a Best Supporting Actor nod for the film. Additionally he has starred in a number of projects including A Simple Plan, Bad Santa, The Man Who Wasn’t There and Bandits.
