British Actor James Murray Joins Cast of ‘Defiance’

James Murray

British actor James Murray, who is probably best known to US viewers for his role in the first season of the UK series ‘Primeval’, has joined the cast of the hit Syfy series Defiance.

When the show returns for its second season in June of 2014 (yes, the wait is that long, by the way), Murray will play Niles Pottinger, the new mayor of the town Defiance. As fans of the show will recall from the stunning season finale that aired on July 8, Amanda Rosewater (series regular Julie Benz) was defeated in the mayoral race by ruthless Castithan “businessman” Datak Tarr (series regular Tony Curran). But Datak’s political win was short-lived as [spoiler alert for those not yet caught up on the show!] he took the life of Earth Republic’s Colonel Galen Marsh (guest star Barry Flatman).

What fans of the show should take note in regards to the new character Niles Pottinger – according to Deadline – is that he has been appointed the position of mayor by the Earth Republic; and he is “shrewd, polished and charming, but his civilized veneer hides a ruthless pragmatist who traffics in information and secrets, and mercilessly punishes those who defy him”. And to make matters worse, his “latest object of desire is ex-mayor Amanda Rosewater”. It’s not going to be an easy transition for the residents of Defiance, huh?

Among Murray’s other credits are the short-lived CBS spy dramedy ‘Chaos’, the short-lived syndicated series ‘Kröd Mändoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire’ and guest roles in episodes of ‘Being Human’ (the US version) and the short-lived (but critically acclaimed) series ‘Keen Eddie’.

‘Defiance’ will return to Syfy for its second season in June of 2014.
