John Lithgow Books Return To ‘How I Met Your Mother’

DEXTER (Season 4)

Veteran actor John Lithgow, who recently appeared in Judd Aptow’s ‘This Is 40’ and Showtime’s ‘Dexter’, has booked a returning guest role in the final season of How I Met Your Mother, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Lithgow joins several well known stars who will also appear in the CBS comedy this fall.

The upcoming ninth year of HIMYM is expected to focus in on the long weekend wedding of Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin (Cobie Smulders) and more with Lithgow on board once again as Barney’s father, Jerry Whitaker. He is described as a “do-gooder.”

“Everyone is heading off to this wedding, and we sort of have this new framework,” co-creator Carter Bays shared of what fans can expect to see. “We want to stress the word ‘framework,’ because we don’t want people to think there [will be] four hours of flower arranging. We’re always going to be flashing back and flashing forward. Decades will span over the course of this weekend.”

The actor joins actor Wayne Brady (The Wayne Brady Show), The View’s Sherri Shepherd and Ellie Kemper (21 Jump Street), who have all booked guest roles. ‘How I Met Your Mother’ is scheduled to return in its final year on Monday, September 23 in a one-hour premiere.
