Royal Pains Season 5 Review “Vertigo” – Hank is Still Working on Acceptance

Royal Pains Season 5 Episode 5 Vertigo (3)

In this episode of Royal Pains, called “Vertigo,” Hank opens up a little bit about his struggles since the surgery, Evan continues to run for city council and Paige ends up with an interesting client.

Thanks to Comic-Con last week, this review is a tad late. But hey, better late than never, right?

It seems like we’ve been waiting a while to find out more about Hank and his possible addiction to pain killers. I was glad to see them finally address it in this episode, but they put a twist on the story that I wasn’t expecting. Unless I misunderstood what happened, it looked like Hank wasn’t so much fighting an addiction as he was hating the fact that he had to take the pills in the first place. Could it be that he has been hiding them because he just doesn’t want to see them and acknowledge that he needs to be on them to continue with his recovery? That could even explain the awkwardness of his exam with Jeremiah. It’s a new way of looking at the entire situation and I’m interested to see how it continues to play out this season.

I like that it was Don who got Hank to admit the truth about how he has been feeling. It must be tough to be a doctor when you’ve been injured. Here you are giving advice to people about how they need to acknowledge their limitations, which of course reminds you of your own. It can’t be easy, but Hank handled it well and I love what he had to say to Molly at the end of the episode.

The show did a good job of making us feel some sympathy for Blythe in this episode. Up until then, I was convinced she was nothing but just plain evil so it was nice to get to see the somewhat human side of her. Not that I necessarily believe Evan’s assumption that Blythe made Paige that offer to be sneaky, but I was happy to see that he wasn’t going to give up on his goal of being on the council so easily. It’ll be interesting to see if he makes it after all of this.

My favorite bits..

Evan’s texts showing up on the screen. That was kind of awesome. Especially the autocorrect.

“It’s a family name. I assume they came over on the Mayflower and did nothing.”

Yep, totally saw the conductor falling. Poor guy. He should’ve known not to jump around like that with Hank in the audience. That’s just asking for trouble.

The music acting as the perfect background as Don chased down Slack with the bottle of wine.

A Philharmoni-what?

Hank asking what was in it for him if he signed Evan’s petition.

“Bad time?”
“Yeah, it’s called adolescence.”

“Grounded on a boat. It doesn’t even make sense.”

Hank admitting that he hated looking at all the bottles of pills after his surgery.

“See kids? This is why you do your homework before video games.” – Ouch.

Hank knowing immediately that Evan had had a bad day.

“Politicians don’t wear hats. They hide your eyes and make you look shifty.”

“And there’s my migraine.”

No Santi! Don’t stumble toward the balcony! *covers eyes*

Henry actually admitting to Don that he too was still on pain meds.

“Well it sounds like neither one of us can accept being sick.”

Hank looking good out on his run. Way better than last time.

Hank telling Molly that he lost his mom way too soon and she was going to regret it if she didn’t make things better with her dad.

Molly running away from Hank. That killed me.

What did you think of this episode of Royal Pains? Got any favorite bits or least favorite bits of your own? I’d love to hear from you!
