‘Rome’ Actress Indira Varma Lands Key ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 4 Role

Game of Thrones‘ season four cast just keeps on expanding: first Pedro Pascal came aboard as Prince Oberyn Martell “The Red Viper,” then Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss was cast in a mystery role, and now EW has revealed Indira Varma, best known for her role as Niobe on HBO’s Rome, will be playing the Red Viper’s lover Ellaria Sand.

In the A Song of Ice and Fire book series, Ellaria is described as “sexually adventurous,” and she is the mother of four of the Sand Snakes, Oberyn’s bastard daughters (no word on when or if they’ll appear in the series). Varma’s casting continues the trend integrating the kingdom of Dorne, an important player in later books, into the world of the series.

In addition to Rome, Varma has also appeared on Human Target, Hunted and Luther.

Does Varma fit your image of Ellaria? Let us know in the comments.

Game of Thrones season four will return in Spring 2014 on HBO.
