Cinemax Orders New Original Series ‘The Knick’ Starring Clive Owen

Cinemax is jumping on the period piece train, and they’re bringing a pair of big Hollywood names with them.

The premium channel announced today that they’ve ordered the 10-part series The Knick starring Academy Award® and Emmy® nominee Clive Owen and directed by Academy Award® winner and Emmy® nominee Steven Soderbergh. Set in 1900 at Knickerbocker Hospital, The Knick focuses on a group of groundbreaking surgeons and nurses who worked together to expand the bounds of modern medicine during an era when antibiotics were unheard of and mortality rates were extremely high.

“We are thrilled that Steven and Clive have chosen to bring this unique and exciting series to CINEMAX,” said Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming in a statement.

Owen’s credits include his big screen roles in Children of Men, Sin City and Closer. He previously worked with the HBO team on the TV movie Hemingway & Gellhorn. Meanwhile Soderbergh is one of the industry’s most renowned directors, having helmed films like Traffic, Ocean’s Eleven and Magic Mike, as well as HBO’s Behind the Candelabra.

The Knick is set to premiere in 2014 on Cinemax.
