Community Season 5 Panel [Comic-Con 2013]

Community Season 4 Episode 13 Advanced Introduction to Finality (6)

Although NBC’s Community hasn’t found its ratings niche like the network would like, fandom is one of the reasons the show still exists today. With a truly hilarious cast and great writing, Community has become a cult-hit and is luckily still alive. Although Season 5 is still without a release date, the study group (or part of it) hit Comic-Con to thank fans and tease next season. No footage for next year was released, but a gag reel and a funny panel consisting of Dan Harmon (creator), Chris McKenna (writer), Jim Rash, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, Ken Jeong, Danny Pudi, and Gillian Jacobs made it worth it, even if Joel McHale and Donald Glover weren’t there.

As the “Celebrating the Fans” portion of the panel title suggests, this year’s Community Comic-Con experience was more of a “thank you” than a preview. Dan Harmon also helped set the mood for a “nerd” panel by coming out on stage dressed in a makeshift Iron Man suit. The focus turned to the fan outcry that helped save the show and they continued their “Six Seasons and a Movie” campaign.

They did release a quick gag real that included Shirley (Brown) and Annie (Brie) rapping, Joel McHale’s butt crack, and the Dean (Rash) being…well, the Dean.

There were sporadic details about next season revealed, which can be summarized quickly:

1) They will shoot all 13 episodes in one fell swoop with production starting in about 3 weeks. This explains why no footage was ready.

2) The writers are taking a different approach this season. They’re mapping out the season from the beginning and hope to make it as well planned-out as possible. Fans shouldn’t be worried that the show will lose its quirkiness because there are some fun episodes planned. Harmon did know there will for sure by an animated episode somewhere in there. Also, a “Dungeons & Dragons 2” episode should appear.

3) Unfortunately, a start date for Season 5 isn’t set yet. They poked fun at “the system” and NBC. Also, there was plenty of bitterness from the decision last year to pull the program indefinitely.

The rest of the panel, including the fan Q&A, showed the cast’s camaraderie. Most of it was really subtle, but my favorite part was watching the lovable Alison Brie creepily put her finger in Ken Jeong’s mouth and give Danny Pudi a wet willy. Also, Starburns (Dino Stamatopoulos) showed up on the fan Q&A mic and was hilarious. It’s this kind of stuff that the fans (like myself) love to see. It’s one of the many ways to make the experience worth it.

It wasn’t all comedy though, as Dan Harmon addressed a few other things. It was interesting having him explain the origin of all the characters, with Abed basically being himself and Brita representing a combination of all his ex-girlfriends. He also addressed his absence from last season and how bad he felt about bashing the show during his hiatus. Harmon ruffled some feathers before and took full responsibility for it.

Community had a strong showing at their 4th Comic-Con. The panel truly celebrated their fans and the hard work they’ve put in to keep the show alive. The real fun came during the panel Q&A as we got to see the actors being themselves. You couldn’t have asked for more.
