‘Game of Thrones’ Casts Major Season 4 Character The Red Viper

Attention Game of Thrones fans: The Red Viper has been cast.

EW broke the news that Prince Oberyn Martell, the suave Prince of Dorne, will be played by Chilean actor Pedro Pascal. Without giving too much away, Prince Oberyn is our gateway to Dorne, an area of Westeros which plays a key role in the later books, but which has only been briefly mentioned on the series as Princess Myrcella’s destination when Tyrion arranged for her to leave King’s Landing. Expect the sexy fighter to live up to his nickname in season four when he shows up in King’s Landing with his mind set on settling an old score with The Mountain.

“This was a tough one,” showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss told EW about the casting. “The Red Viper is sexy and charming, yet believably dangerous; intensely likable, yet driven by hate. The boys love him, the girls love him, and he loves them all back. Unless your last name is Lannister. We found a fellow who can handle the job description and make it seem effortless. He wasn’t easy to find and he won’t be easy to stop.”

While Pascal is hardly a household name (yet), his previous credits include appearances on The Good Wife, Red Widow, Lights Out and he is currently in the midst of an arc on USA’s Graceland.

A Song of Ice and Fire fans, do you think Pascal will be able to embody The Red Viper’s easy coolness? And show fans, are you eager to meet Prince Oberyn?

Game of Thrones season four is set to premiere in 2014.
