Supernatural Chat: How Will Ben Edlund Leaving Affect the Show?

How will ben edlund leaving supernatural effect the show

Hey there, Supernatural fans! I know that you all were probably just as surprised as I was when the news came out earlier this month that Ben Edlund would be leaving the show. His departure has been on my mind as we’re getting farther into hellatus (and therefore closer to the season 9 premiere). I keep thinking about all of the great things he’s done and what that could mean to our show.

The way I see it, there are two schools of thought on the subject; either A – Edlund leaving the show will make a huge difference and we’ll all pine for him like a long, lost lover; or B – the show will get a new infusion of ideas and will be just as good (or possibly better) than ever. So let’s break it down both ways, shall we?

Ben Edlund leaving will make a huge difference

Okay, so the first thought is based on Edlund’s years’ of experience on the show and the fact that he seemed to know Sam and Dean so well. When I think about the episodes that he’s had a hand in over the seasons – either as writer or director – like “The French Mistake,” “Blood Brother,” “Everybody Hates Hitler,” and “Monster Movie,” I can’t help but to start to mourn just a little bit. The very idea of no longer having episodes like that on our beloved show is almost too much to bear.

The show will be just fine

But on the other hand, there is comfort in knowing that we do have a plethora of great writers still on the show. Plus, I know I’m not the only one who felt the addition of Jeremy Carver as showrunner before season 8 was a fantastic idea. With the show in his capable hands, plus the fact that Eric Charmelo and Nicole Snyder have returned, is all good news. After all, Charmelo and Snyder gave us “My Heart will go On,” “Mannequin 3: The Reckoning,” and “You Can’t Handle the Truth,” so they’ve got quite the track record themselves.

Overall, I think that I am leaning more towards the “The show will be fine” side of the fence, if only because I want Supernatural to do well in its ninth season. First and foremost, I will always be a fan and as such, I just want to watch episodes that make me happy. So while I am sad to see Edlund go, I think that we will be just fine without him. I also wish him well as he goes off to work with Eric Kripke on Revolution.

What did you guys think when you heard the news that Edlund was leaving Supernatural? Do you think the show will be fine without him or are you worried about what we’ll see in season 9? Drop a line in the comments and let me know, I love hearing from you guys!
