FX Orders A Comedy Pilot Starring Billy Crystal

Billy Crystal could be returning to TV.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, FX has ordered a pilot for The Comedians, a half-hour comedy starring Crystal as a “veteran comedian” who isn’t happy about being matched up with a young comedian for a late-night sketch show. The single camera comedy is based on a Swedish series and comes from creators Larry Charles (Seinfeld) and Matt Nix (Burn Notice). Production on the pilot is scheduled to begin this summer.

Although Crystal is best known for his film roles and multiple stints hosting the Academy Awards, the actor began his career on the small screen. His most notable role was that of Jodie Dallas, the first openly gay character in the cast of an American series, on ABC’s Soap from 1977-1981.

FX is looking to expand its comedy lineup as the launch of its younger skewing channel FXX grows near. Several of FX’s existing comedy properties are scheduled to move to FXX beginning in September, including It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and The League.
