Hawaii Five-0 Season 3 Review “He welo `oihana” – Steve and Doris Play Mission Impossible

Hawaii Five-0 - He welo 'oihana (Family Business)

In this episode of Hawaii Five-0, Steve helps his mother with a very important problem, Kono’s issues with Adam come to a dangerous head, while Danny’s romantic life doesn’t go as well as he’d like.

If you’ve read a lot of my reviews then you know I’m a huge fan of Steve and Danny’s bromance and the team working together on cases. It’s kind of funny to me then that I enjoyed this episode as much as I did because, when you think about it, it didn’t have a whole lot of either.

Being the bromance lover that I am, I really wanted to be annoyed by the fact that Doris was going to have a big part in this episode with Steve, but dangit, I can’t seem to help the fact that I just dig her. I actually found the whole Mission Impossible operation pretty entertaining to watch and was happy that Steve finally got a little more truth out of Doris and was able to help her when she needed it. Now, would I have preferred to see Danny and Steve doing some sort of Mission Impossible op together, all dressed in black and climbing up and down elevator shafts? I think that goes without saying. But this was an okay substitute.

As for Kono, I very much want to believe Adam’s story and I hope he’s telling her the truth about wanting to disconnect his family from its shady past, but I just don’t know if I do yet. Plus, him telling the truth may not be that important now that he’s discovered she cloned his phone. If he is telling the truth then he’ll probably be pretty upset about that, and if he isn’t telling the truth then he’ll have more reason to possibly hurt her. I’m glad that whole gun thing finally came back though, seems like we’ve been waiting forever to find out what Michael did with it.

Finally there’s Danny and Gabby. I felt a little sorry for him when she didn’t show up, but seeing as how she’s all over the photos for next week’s episode, I couldn’t feel too badly for him. It is interesting that she’s coming back into his life after so long though and it does make me wonder what they have in store for the two of them.

My favorite bits…

Danny giving away all of the presents for Gabby.

Danny telling Grace he was okay because he had the prettiest girl in the world. Aw, too cute.

Steve informing Danny that his mother was a suspect in a Federal case. Oh, boy.

Doris pointing out that she did the FBI a favor because she pointed out their weak spots.

Steve walking into his mother’s kitchen and finding what looked like a major operation happening.

Steve asking where the women went who use to teach him magic tricks.

Knowing as soon as Kono agreed so easily to “sit this one out” that she was planning to do anything but that.

Danny holding the phone up higher for Michael to see the men in the picture.

“You ever disrespect our friend like that again I’m going to let him come back here and bust up your pretty face.”

“Jeez, flirt much?”
“I only have eyes for you, darling.”

“Is he always this negative?”
“He didn’t get it from me.”

Steve pointing out all the things that people the age of his mom and her friends would normally be doing.

Kono listening to Adam’s phone call. Him calling her “Five-0” did not sound good at all.

Kono leaving her phone as bait. Brilliant.

Freaking out a little when Kono had to call in her own ambulance.

Chin reassuring Steve that Kono was okay, but as soon as she was back on her feet, he was going to kill her.

Max asking if he could skip their normal repartee because he had a lot of work to do.

Danny pointing out to Steve that Doris was his mother and he should help her.

“Three retirees launching a cover op? How do you think that will go down?”

Nick calling Steve and Doris “McGarretts.”

Wanting very much to believe Adam when he said he was trying to protect Kono, but still not sure if I can.

Literally saying “UH OH!” when Adam’s phone rang and he saw that Kono had cloned it. Oopsie.

“I’m not gonna blow magic breath.”

Doris doing a magic trick in the middle of their op.

Steve covering for his mom and taking down a couple of guards on his own.

Steve hitchhiking a ride on the roof of the elevator.

Steve refusing to leave his mom – blown op or not.

Yep, totally called that. I knew Steve was going to throw the microfiche in the fire. Haha! But I didn’t see him pulling the sleight of hand thing. Nicely done, Steve-O!

“You know I never figured you for the type to geek out over magic.”
