NCIS Season 10 Review “Berlin” – What Will Happen to Them Now?

NCIS - Berlin

In this episode of NCIS, called “Berlin,” Tony and Ziva head off on their quest to locate Bodnar, while Gibbs and McGee deal with a visit from the new Mossad Director.

Okay, first up, I just have to say that the writing team at NCIS is fantastic. Not just for all the standard reasons, such as they write such great characters and know how to leave us in suspense and all that other good stuff. No, I want to tip my hats to them for specifically being able to give us the great Tony and Ziva moments that we got in this episode without making those moments scream “Tiva” to me. Now, I know all you Tiva-lovers are going to claim that we saw signs of true love there, but as a wholehearted non-Tiva person I’m going to say that I saw nothing but two people who were close friends and nothing more. Holler at me if you want, but my point here is not to argue. It’s just to say that I admire writers who can make both sets of the fandom happy. You guys saw what you wanted and I saw what I wanted. What could be better than that?

Now, moving on to the rest of the story – I have to admit that a part of me was kind of dreading this episode (see reasons why above), so the fact that it didn’t make me want to hurl but drew me in instead was fantastic. I think part of that was due to the amazingly wonderful Marina Sirtis as Orli. Whereas Eli always kind of annoyed me, Orli made me love her from the moment she appeared on screen. Was she just as secret and manipulative as Eli? You betcha. Did I mind it nearly as much? Nope, I really didn’t.

I strangely don’t feel the need to get into details about the case. We all saw it and we all know what happened, but the impression I was left with at the end had more to do with characters and their relationships than anything else. What will happen to Tony and Ziva? How badly are they hurt? What will Gibbs, McGee, Abby, Ducky, Palmer and everyone else’s reactions be when they find out that those two were hurt? How will the final 30 seconds of this episode impact the hunt for Bodnar? Will it really put Gibbs and the rest of his team on the warpath now? These are the questions that I can’t believe we have to wait 6 days, 23 hours and 30 minutes to find out (yes, I’m counting.).

My favorite bits..

McGee and Tony both have a point. Tony is gloating, but McGee was part of Ziva’s secret. I’d say that makes them even.

Pretty much falling in love with Orli the moment I saw her. I’m biased because I loved Marina Sirtis in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

“Her independence lights up the room. You molded her well.”
“She came that way.”

“What do you got, Abs?”
“The heebie-jeebies, Gibbs.”

Abby opening the trunk to show Gibbs how Mossad had transported the body. Talk about budget cuts.

“Abs, you may have to great creative on this one.”
“That is my specialty.”

Tony saying that he’d pay to see Ziva rough up the new Mossad Director. Yeah, I’d probably pay to see that, too.

Ducky’s absolute outrage that Mossad treated the body so dismissively.

Abby’s “Abby out” when she signed off with Ducky and Gibbs.

“Every time we deal with Mossad, something bad happens.” – He is so right about that one.

Gibbs reassuring Orli that he always formed his own opinion. That’s very true.

McGee’s pathetic attempt to look over his shoulder. Yeah, not so stealthy.

“You can’t tell me you prefer this sad décor to the garden.”

Knowing before he pulled them out, that Tony had gotten McGee lederhosen. Is it wrong that I kinda want to see McGee where them?

“Tony, you can ask Adam out on a date later.” – Haha! Literally laughed out loud at that.

Tony’s “Yes, ma’am” when Ziva ordered him to call McGee and get a trace going on Bodnar.

McGee and Gibbs watching Tony strip. That was just awkward and yet kind of hilarious.

“You can’t take a nap with your pants on.” – Why do I feel like that’s something that Michael Weatherly would also say, especially given his apparent penchant for dropping his pants on set every chance he gets?

Ziva pointing out to Tony that naps work better when you lay down and stop talking.

“Are you seriously hanging up my clothes, sweet cheeks?” – Aw, cute reference to Under Covers.

“When I have a man, the favors I offer have little to do with clothes.”

Abby’s skeleton oven mitts making another appearance. I want a set of those so bad.

Vance having McGee hack into Mossad’s database. Whoa!

“These rooms keep getting worse.”

“My wife is not a tactic.”

“You realize you’re going to have to be the girl, right?”
“Then you lead.”

Ziva dancing with Tony reminding her of dancing with her father.

“I’m sure she wants him dead as badly as I do.”
“I doubt that. It’s her job, but he was your father.”

Ziva telling Tony that Orli was the reason her parents split up. Whoa, I so didn’t see that coming.

Ziva admitting that maybe Orli actually loved her father.

Tony telling Ziva that he should thank Orli for making Ziva who she was.

Yep, so totally saw that coming. The old “car out of nowhere” thing is getting so easy to spot now that I’ve seen it, like, a million times. Also? HOLY CRAP!!

Tony’s bloody hand reaching over to touch Ziva’s and then flopping away. Ahhhh!!!!
