Nurse Jackie Season 5 “Happy Fucking Birthday” Review

Nurse Jackie is back for a fifth season with a new showrunner (Clyde Phillips) and new guest stars (Morris Chestnut), which begged the question would we see a new Jackie? Fans will recall that season 4 started off with major turmoil for our favorite pill-popping nurse – a failing marriage, rehab, a new administrator and pregnant best friend. When we last saw Jackie, she’d been fired from her job at All Saints Hospital.

It was nice to see some return to normalcy, as the always entertaining Gloria Akalitus is back in her role as chief administrator. It would have been nice to get a little insight as to how this happened, perhaps it will be revealed as the season progresses. The return of Akalitus could of course only mean that Dr. Cruz (portrayed by Bobby Cannavale) was no longer at All Saints. Again, it would have been nice to get a little explanation for his absence.

It seems as though Eddie did not benefit from whatever unseen force reinstated Jackie and Gloria. That didn’t prevent him from randomly showing up at the hospital in time to help with a pharmacy crisis. How convenient. It was no surprise when Gloria reinstated him for an offense that would have gotten most people fired.

The good news is that Jackie is still sober, although she continues to struggle with staying clean. Oh Jackie, I’m so glad you threw away that balloon of uppers that were fresh out of a football player’s butt. Jackie’s sobriety has done nothing to improve her broken marriage. She and Kevin are still at odds and he does not seem at all inclined to ever forgive her transgressions. I’m not necessarily rooting for Jackie and Kevin getting back together, but it would be nice to see them learn how to be friends. No one will contest the fact that what Jackie did was wrong, but Kevin has just become unbearable now. Enough.

The biggest shocker of the premier episode was Dr. O’Hara’s announcement that she’s quitting All Saints so she can return to England and focus on raising her baby. Eve Best will be sorely missed on the show. I love her friendship with Jackie. At least we still have Zoe.
