Shameless Season 3 Review “Order Room Service”

It’s time for sh*t to hit the fan on Shameless this week, as the penultimate episode, ‘Order Room Service’, leaves most of our characters in pretty precarious and/or distressed positions ready for next week’s finale. This was a great episode that, while starting off in typical dramedy mode, really ramped up the stakes and tension towards the end of the hour.

For starters, Karen is awake now after Jody’s miraculous cure, but is more than a little worse for wear. Karen’s state, with us having known her as the manipulative mean girl for so long, really is quite disturbing, and Lip knows who was responsible for the accident even if he hasn’t quite figured out how to deal with it yet. He goes to Kev for advice on escaping a relationship with someone so unstable, but his concern is more for what has already happened to Karen rather than what could happen to him.

Mandy really is off her rocker and, after Lip sees how damaged Karen really is, he confronts her at Mickey’s wedding. Who knows how she’s going to react next week, but my guess is that Lip might regret not taking Kev’s sage advice about backing out slowly. And that’s not the only showdown at the wedding, as Ian decides to crash the party too. His and Mickey’s relationship has been a big part of the last couple of seasons, and I hope it gets resolved soon. Will he and Mandy leave at the end of the season?

Meanwhile, Fiona and Jimmy reach a point of crisis in their relationship when Fiona receives a call about Jimmy’s studio apartment in Michigan. Seeing as she was all ready to move the kids and get a transfer at work, it comes as a bit of a shock. But he has much bigger issues to deal with than his relationship, after he’s told by Estefania’s father that his legal wife has been deported. We know what that means, and it certainly feels like we were saying goodbye to the character when he stepped up onto that boat.

The only character who comes out of this looking good is, shockingly, Frank. His and Carl’s father/son bonding experience stealing from the nice foster couple who wanted to adopt Carl turns sour when the police turn up at the Gallagher house. Thankfully, and to everyone’s surprise, Frank tells them that it was all his idea, letting Carl off the hook by getting into the cop car himself. As Lip says, hell must have just froze over.

It’s clear that we’re building to something huge for next week’s big finish, but I can’t really see how they can top this. Is Jimmy already dead? Will Fiona ever find out what happened to him? Has Frank really turned over a new leaf? Let us know your thoughts and predictions in the comments below.
