Exclusive Interview: Last Man Standing’s Christoph Sanders Talks Simple Kyle, Ghosting & Game of Thrones

Christoph Sanders interview

There is nothing wrong with keeping it simple. No one agrees with that more than Christoph Sanders who plays the simple and lovable Kyle Anderson on the ABC series “Last Man Standing” which is ending its second season with only two episodes to go.

TV Equals had a chance to chat about all this with the very cool Mr Sanders in an exclusive interview. Check out what he had to say below and don’t miss him in the new episode of Last Man Standing that airs tonight at 8/7c on ABC.

Only two episodes left of ‘Last Man Standing.’ Was it a fun season to be in?

Christoph Sanders: Yeah, it was. It’s kind of funny that it’s already over. We finished shooting couple of weeks ago. Last season I think we shot twenty four, and this season we shot eighteen. So it feels kind of short, but it was really good. The show started coming into it’s own in a really big way, near towards the end. So we’re ending strong.

What can you tease about the upcoming two episodes, for the show and your character, Kyle?

Christoph Sanders: Well, the show, we’re all hoping for a third season and I feel like we’re ending the show in preparation for a third season, and nothing is too definitive. I can’t say that there’s a whole lot of new stuff going on with Kyle. My character started dating Molly Ephraim’s character, Mandy, and so there’s just a lot more of that conflict to come, dealing with Tim’s [Allen] reaction to all that. I think more than anything, we’re just kind of excited about a third season and we’ve all got our fingers crossed.

Mandy and Kyle have such a sweet relationship. What’s it been like working with Molly on this?

Christoph Sanders: It’s great. Molly is a really sweet girl, and we’ve been friends ever since we started the show. We did the pilot a couple of years back, and so it’s been fun. We’ve always sort of assumed that this may have happened from the beginning, because they were such likeminded people, the characters on the show. When they told us, I guess it would’ve been a little bit in the second season, that eventually we’d sort of start winding up together, I think we were excited about it because we knew that it would create a lot of fun stuff for us to do.

Kyle has a simple way of approaching life and his relationships with other. What’s your favorite part of playing him?

Christoph Sanders: I think my favorite part is sort of that simplicity. I don’t feel that my life, in general, is necessarily that simple, and so it’s kind of fun to go to work and play somebody that literally has a one track mind. He’s still is so kind of naïve and fresh to the world that it’s sort of fun. I get to go to work and rediscover things that I’ve known about for quite a while.

How much of your work do you take home when you’re done? Do you look at real life situations and wonder how Kyle would deal with them?

Christoph Sanders: I think generally on accident, every now and then, I’ll have a friend who will kind of say, ‘Wow, that was a real Kyle moment.’ Unfortunately, it’s never necessarily a compliment, I think [laughs]. The reason I say that is because for somebody who’s not okay with being that naïve and simple, when they act that way, it sort of takes people aback. So, yeah, I try not to take too much work home, but at the same time, it never hurts to kind of look at things with a fresh eye.

What’s been the most memorable moment of season two?

Christoph Sanders: I think being able to shoot the scene, one of the last episodes that aired, it was called ‘Breaking Curfew,’ we go to a hotel room with intentions of hooking up, and I previously had a conversation with Tim’s character, Mike, and he’s kind of like, ‘Before you do anything, just think about what would Mike do.’ So how we shot is that he would kind of be ghosted in our scene, and so I would see him and Molly wouldn’t. Just the shooting process of that, and there at the end, I’m trying to calm myself down so that I can get out of the room. Being able to shoot a scene like that with somebody that’s as funny as Tim was pretty memorable. I think that’s up there.

Do you have a message for the fans as they head into these final episodes?

Christoph Sanders: Just keep your fingers crossed for a third. We love making the show, and hopefully we’ll be making it for another five years to come.

If you could guest star on any other TV show, your pick of the litter, which one would it be?

Christoph Sanders: Maybe ‘Game of Thrones.’ I love that show. I love that type of show.

What house would you like to be a part of, if you had your pick?

Christoph Sanders: Any house works. I think it’s just a really cool show. I was a big fan of the ‘Lord of the Rings’ films and I really like that fantasy genre, especially when it’s with the medieval style stuff. I don’t know, any way I could.
