‘Pushing Daisies’ Alum Anna Friel Joins Cast of ‘The Vatican’ Pilot

Among the various pilots currently up for consideration at the cable networks, one that is getting quite a bit of buzz is the Showtime pilot The Vatican that will star actor Kyle Chandler of ‘Friday Night Lights’ fame.

Now word comes out that Golden Globe-nominated actress Anna Friel (‘Pushing Daisies’) has joined the cast of the provocative contemporary genre thriller about spirituality, power and politics set against the modern-day political machinations within the Catholic Church.

Friel will play Kayla Duffy, the younger sister of Cardinal Thomas Duffy (Chandler), who is very different from her brother. Kayla is a sexually active, hard-partying New Yorker, who is darkly witty and openly rebellious against all norms and institutions, including the church. But while Kayla and Cardinal Duffy are close, honest and loving siblings, she is always a complication, and at times a liability for a man of the cloth who is one of the public leaders of the Catholic Church.

Besides her work on ‘Pushing Daisies’, Friel has appeared in the box office films ‘Timeline’, ‘Land of the Lost’, ‘Limitless’ and the Woody Allen flick ‘You will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger’. She also had a role in the made-for-TV movie ‘Neverland’.

‘The Vatican’ is being produced by Sony Pictures Television in association with Showtime and the pilot script will be written by Paul Attanasio (‘House’ and ‘Donnie Brasco’) with Sir Ridley Scott as director. These men join David Zucker (‘The Good Wife’) as executive producers.

Again, this is a pilot only with a decision on the potential project being picked up to be made later this year.
