Bones Season 8 Review “The Survivor in the Soap” – Many Secrets are Revealed

Bones Season 8 Episode 18 The Survivor in the Soap

In this episode of Bones, called “The Survivor in the Soap,” the team comes across a body that holds a lot of secrets; not just about a murderer, but about the terrible life the man lived as a child.

A few episodes back, I remember seeing someone comment on Twitter how they were getting tired of this show preaching to its audience and pushing agendas. It’s funny to me that I feel the exact opposite. Sure, perhaps some of the messages in some of the episodes have been “preachy,” but those messages have been important ones and I have no problem hearing them – especially when they are delivered with such great writing and by using this amazing cast. And believe me, if I thought it was getting to be too much, I’d have no problem saying it. In fact, I keep waiting for these types of stories to get annoying, and they just never do.

Tonight’s episode spoke of the atrocity known as child soldiers. I have to admit that this isn’t something that I thought about a lot – which was part of the point, I’m sure. By hearing the story not only of their victim, but his friend, as well as Arastoo’s own personal story, we were made to realize that this problem is very real and still exists, even if some of us don’t want to think about it. It may not be much, but at the very least the show has raised my awareness about it, which is something.

But beyond all of the sadness, there were some fun moments in this episode, too – this is Bones after all. Booth and Brennan trying to decide where to go on vacation was classic and I really liked that Cam and Arastoo have finally come out of the closet about their relationship. If someone had told me before the season started that Cam was going to get involved with an intern, I have no doubt that I would have rolled my eyes and groaned at the prospect. But Arastoo is such an amazing character and so romantic that I simply love them together. I also think it’s fun that we have three such different couples on the team now.

That being said, I don’t know if I’m ready for Sweets to be paired off just yet. I’m selfishly still enjoying him living with Booth and Brennan and I’m afraid if he finds a girl, that will stop. Crazy, I know, but that’s how I feel.

My favorite bits..

Dead guy in barrel = worst mood-killer ever.

“We haven’t been away since Christine was born.”
“I have.”
“You were running away from the police.” – Semantics.

Finding out that Booth and Bones have very different ideas of where to go on vacation.

“I want to come back stupid.” – I am totally with Booth on this one.

Booth asking Christine for help in convincing Brennan to go somewhere with a beach on vacation.

“That was a study? They should’ve just called.” – Haha!

Arastoo getting uncomfortable during the whole, um, “extremities” conversation.

Angela asking for an age estimate and getting a bunch of science-speak from Arastoo and Brennan in reply.

Hodgins wisely deciding to run away when Angela started talking about Arastoo and Cam.

“I’m surprised they have their clothes on.”

Arastoo watching the bones in a massive dishwasher.

“Loving you is the easiest thing in my life right now.” – Excuse me while I melt onto the floor. *happy sigh*

“You don’t seem like an FBI agent.”
“Thank you.”

The look on Booth’s face when Alex said he wasn’t a small man.

Brennan and Arastoo discovering that their victim had been a child soldier. So incredibly sad.

“No one has it easy in war.”

“Right, skeletons and poop. Well, way to ruin Paris, Bones.” – No kidding. Eeew.

Brennan identifying the little boy in the photo as their victim.

Alex ruining Booth’s shot.

Arastoo losing his cool and blowing up at Hodgins. Whoa.

Arastoo reminding Cam that she couldn’t treat him like a boyfriend while they were at work.

Brennan looking through her photos and realizing that she had been working alongside child soldiers.

Kind of loving the fact that Booth, Brennan and Sweets are all talking about the case at 3am in their pj’s.

Brima walking through the gallery and telling the awful stories about each of the children in the photos.

“Did it ever occur to you to just…do the right thing?”

Sweets defending Booth’s methods to Alex.

“He has a reason. He always has a reason.”

Brennan telling the people good things about Alex.

Arastoo opening up to Cam about his cousin being taken away.

“That boat just sailed, Arastoo.”

Angela having to explain to Brennan what was happening with Arastoo and Cam.

Kind of wanting to clap along with Hodgins.

“Paradise. Mass graves for me and a beach with liquor for you.” – Sounds like the perfect getaway for Booth and Brennan.
