Kyle Chandler Lands Lead Role In Showtime’s ‘The Vatican’

Friday Night Light’s star Kyle Chandler has signed on to take the lead in Showtime’s pilot The Vatican, David Nevins, the President of Entertainment at Showtime, has made the official announcement. Chandler, whose fans have seen him in a variety of roles over the years – from a cop in ‘Super 8’ to a dedicated coach of FNL – will now play Cardinal Thomas Duffy.

The multi-talented star’s character has been described as both charismatic and enigmatic. Duffy is also the Archbishop of New York whose progressive ways has drawn mixed emotions within the hierarchy of the Catholic Church. Chandler joins the already cast actors Matthew Goode (A Single Man) and Sebastian Koch (A Good Day to Die Hard).

‘The Vatican’ is described as a “provocative contemporary genre thriller about spirituality, power and politics.” The Showtime series plays out against the “modern-day political machinations within the Catholic church.” Production on the drama is slated to begin sometime in 2013 by way of producers Sony Pictures Television.

Chandler brings with credits that include ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still’, ‘King Kong’, ‘Broken City’, and most recently ‘Argo’ and ‘Zero Dark Thirty’. He has also appeared in the series ‘Early Edition’, ‘Homefront’, ‘What About Joan’ and ‘Grey’s Anatomy’.
