The CW Developing Spin-Off to ‘The Vampire Diaries’

The Vampire Diaries Before Sunset

There have been rumors for years now about expanding ‘The Vampire Diaries’ franchise over at The CW; and now it looks like those rumors are indeed fact.

According to a report by the folks at Entertainment Weekly the 5th ranked major network is developing a spin-off series called The Originals [the working title] out of the popular Thursday night drama that is currently in its fourth season. Being launched as a backdoor pilot out of the episode set to air on April 25, the potential series would center on “the original family of vampires” and would star Klaus, portrayed by actor Joseph Morgan. This episode will find Klaus “returning to the supernatural melting pot that is the French Quarter of New Orleans — a town he helped build centuries ago — and is reunited with his diabolical former protégé Marcel”.

Julie Plec, who is the executive producer of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ alongside Kevin Williamson (who is NOT involved in the spin-off) will write this episode and will be the showrunner should ‘The Originals’ receive a series order. Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo will also serve as executive producers.

It is being reported that current hottie actress Phoebe Tonkin (formerly of ‘The Secret Circle’), who plays werewolf Hayley on ‘The Vampire Diaries’ is also set to star in this spin-off; but a lot of fans of the series are wondering whether fan favorite Elijah (portrayed by actor Daniel Gillies) as well as sister Rebekah (portrayed by actress Claire Holt) will be included in the spin-off. Unfortunately, at this time, there is no information on their status with the project.

In the meantime, ‘The Vampire Diaries’ will return to The CW from its holiday hiatus next Thursday, January 17 at 8/7c.
