‘Cult’ First Look: The CW Debuts Trailer and Photos for Their Ambitious Conspiracy Thriller

The CW has released a trippy new trailer for their intriguing midseason show-within-a-show thriller Cult. The series stars Matt Davis (The Vampire Diaries) as investigative journalist Jeff Sefton, who becomes entangled in a web of obsessive TV fans after he discovers his brother’s disappearance is connected to an addictive show called Cult. With the help of Skye (Jessica Lucas), a research assistant for the show, Jeff tries to unravel the connection between the fictitious Cult and the show-inspired deaths and conspiracies surrounding it. Confused yet? Well, hang on because there’s more: the show within the show is about the “cat-and-mouse game” between the always charismatic Robert Knepper’s (Prison Break) Billy Grimm, the onscreen cult leader who may or may not be a cult leader off-screen as well, and Alona Tal’s (Supernatural)LAPD detective Kelly Collins, whose investigation into her sister’s disappearance within the show mirrors Jeff’s investigation in the real world.

The plot is complicated, but the trailer does a handy job of distilling all of that information in three minutes of mind-bending creepiness that warns us “not to watch” multiple times. You’ll want to watch though, if for no other reason than to figure out why Grimm’s victims utter the unsettling line, “Well, hey, these things just snap right off,” before they die. The high concept series looks convoluted, but also potentially addictive…just hopefully not as addictive as it is for its fictional fans. Watch the trailer below, and be sure to check out the new photos from the series as well (notice Grimm has the “cult” nesting symbol that pops up throughout the trailer–and in the promotional art–tattooed on his hand).

Cult premieres Tuesday, February 19th on The CW. Did the trailer pique your interest? Let us know in the comments.
