30 Rock Season 7 Review “Mazel Tov, Dummies!”

30 Rock Season 7 Episode 7 Mazel Tov, Dummies!

When sitcoms enter their final season, a pressing need comes over the show to give the people involved a happy ending. In general, sitcoms are designed to make us laugh, but also warm our hearts. If you’re doing it right, you reach a stage with your audience where everyone wants to go home happy. With 30 Rock, Tina Fey has shown us over and over again that she wants to not just go against popular sitcom tropes, but outright attack them. Therefore, it wasn’t out of line to wonder if Tina Fey could allow Liz Lemon to finally be successful in the arenas in which she has struggled the most: sex and relationships. After finally finding her muse (and paper clips) in the bedroom earlier thi season, it was time to tackle Liz Lemon’s love life.

Therefore, it made perfect sense to have Liz attempt to make her wedding into no big deal before finally giving in to a more sitcom-friendly version of a wedding. Somewhere, I like to imagine Tina Fey struggling with the scripts for the final season before finally deciding “Fine! We can let her be an un-ironic stereotype for once!” The resulting calamity was really something to behold: Tracy gets hit by a car before offering his best wishes. Dennis (now with an adopted, and armed, Black Dennis) heading over to the hospital to steal all of the flowers. And, of course, Jack delivering the Winston Wolf line before happily heading down to City Hall to see his mentee be married in her Princess Leia dress. It was never going to be flower bouquets and love poetry at a Liz Lemon wedding. Still, the scene was filled with warmth in addition to the typical 30 Rock craziness.

No, it wasn’t your typical wedding episode, but it fit so perfectly within the 30 Rock universe. With Liz Lemon’s love life taken care of, hopefully we can get back to the business of destroying NBC from the inside. After all, Jack needs his happy ending too.

What did you think of the Liz Lemon wedding?
