New Girl Season 2 Review “Thanksgiving 2” – The Fun in Dysfunction November 21, 2012 New Girl, Reviews It was an explosion of visiting family in “Thanksgiving 2,” this week’s episode of New Girl, when Jess’s divorced parents and Schmidt’s brother came for dinner at the loft. I love that Jamie Lee Curtis and Rob Reiner somehow created Zooey Deschanel…no offense to Mr. Reiner (who I met and interviewed this summer and found to be delightful), but I think we can trace most of Jess’s hotness to her mama. Even though her parents can barely stand to be in the same room together, Jess has apparently been trying to Parent Trap them back together since her childhood, often dragging CeCe into her elaborate plans. After tricking them into arriving for dinner at the same time, Jess gave her mom a makeover and then employed Nick to flirt with her mother to make her father jealous. It worked a little, but not enough to ensure a reunion. Jess had to face the fact that her dreams of a happy family aren’t dead, but they do have to change just a little. She does have a family around her, the weird little one she fell into when she moved in with the boys. In an amazing feet of d-baggery, Schmidt’s brother (Rob Riggle), known on IMDB as “Big Schmidt,” turned out to be even more Schmidty than Schmidt. In fact, a very bored Winston goaded them into engaging in a series of battles to determine who deserved the single moniker “Schmidt.” But it was CeCe who kicked the game into high gear by convincing the boys that a true man would be comfortable kissing another man. And that was Winston’s punishment for the night. A kiss from Big Schmidt. For a second, I thought maybe big brother would like the kiss a little too much, but he really just missed his ex-wife, a moment that brought him back down to human being status. That’s something he and his brother have in common. They can be outrageous one moment and totally sympathetic the next. A nice holiday treat, but I’m starting to think they should just skip the turkey from now on. Last year, if I remember correctly, it got shoved into the oven and burned? This year, Jess tried to stuff it down the disposal. Maybe tofurkey would fair better. What did you think of the episode? Let me know below!
